2005 UOSLR Draft in Review
1. Golden State Warriors - Deron Williams PG 6'3'' 210 21 B- B B C+ C- A
Many felt Carmelo Anthony was a sure lock for the #1 pick but it's hard to argue against Deron Williams here who will undoubtedly be the franchise PG for many years to come. PG was a bigger needs for the Warriors so this pick makes sense.
Draft Grade: A-
2. Indiana Pacers - Carmelo Anthony SF 6'8'' 225 22 B+ B+ C B- B C
The man many people felt would be the #1 pick drops down to the #2 right into the lap of the Indiana Pacers who have to be ecstatic with this pick. The Pacers needed all the help they get. A franchise that has been a compete disaster for the past couple of seasons gets the type of player that could really boost this team back into relevancy.
Draft Grade: A
3. Cleveland Cavaliers - Rudy Gay SF 6'8'' 222 19 B C+ C C+ C A
The Cavaliers decided to go with the young and very talented Rudy Gay with the 3rd pick in the draft. Gay may not be UOSLR ready just yet but many scouts believe his potential has no ceiling. The Cavs now have three youngsters to build around in Josh Howard, Chris Bosh, and now Rudy Gay. The Cavaliers are definitely heading in the right direction but it may take another season or two before we can see them in playoff contention again.
Draft Grade: B+
4. Utah Jazz -Andris Biedrins C 6'11'' 240 20 C+ D+ D B B- A
The Utah Jazz are a franchise in complete disarray. It was barely a season ago when the Utah Jazz made a blockbuster trade sending the young and talented Dajuan Wagner along with a boatload of future draft picks for all-world player Dirk Nowitzki and the ridiculous hunk of a contract that is Shawn Kemp. Barely two months into the season, the Jazz with a below .500 record and out of playoff contention were forced to trade away Dirk Nowitzki and rebuild once again. Andris Biedrins is no franchise player and may not be UOSLR ready for another two seasons which may be to late for current GM Mike. Biedrins is a one dimensional player who was probably taken way to high. The Jazz need to hope Shawn Kemps contract comes off the books next season or they're current GM is probable done in this league.
Draft Grade: D
5.Dallas Mavericks - Andrew Bogut C 7'0'' 245 20 B- C C B- C+ A
The Mavericks after 3 consecutive playoff appearances, albeit, 3 disappointing playoff appearances finally decided to tear things up and build a true contender. If we were grading based on off-season moves, they would certainly be given an F having signed 31 year old Damon Stoudamire to a 2 year 30 million dollar deal. It seems that Dallas is content with being mediocre season after season. A full true rebuild for this upcoming season would have been ideal but unless Dallas has another deal lined up for Damon this franchise is heading in the wrong direction. Bogut is a solid pick here. He will never be a dominate big man in this league but a double-double player is not out of the realm.
Draft Grade: B-
6. Boston Celtics - Luol Deng SF 6'8'' 220 21 B- C C- B+ C+ A
The Celtics are truly building a young and talented team with the addition of Deng with the 6th pick in the draft. I feel like Deng should have certainly gone ahead of both Biedrins and Bogut. The Celtics now have a solid core of Boozer, Deng, Iguodala and Hinrich to build around unfortunately when you go four straight years with 39 or less wins and face the Contract Year all that young talent which you drafted will not have to be shipped away for readily available talent. Right now they are to young to compete in the always talented East. They need to find a package of veteran talent to be able attain the goal of 40 wins or playoffs this season or we may have seen the last of the current Boston GM in this league.
Draft Grade: B
7. Denver Nuggets-Ronnie Brewer SG 6'7'' 223 20 B- C C B+ C A
The Nuggets are one of the many franchises in this league with zero to no direction. With the #7 pick in the draft the Nuggets selected Ronnie Brewer who is one of the pieces the Nuggets will receive in the Deshawn Stevenson trade. Ronnie Brewer is a solid complimentary player but no Stevenson. If Brewer had been drafted to play along side Stevenson this would have made sense. The fact that Stevenson turned into Brewer and a bunch of other complimentary role players, this draft grade gets a big fat F.
Draft Grade: F
8. Portland Trailblazers - Travis Outlaw SF 6'9'' 195 21 B C C B C+ A
New owner calls for new direction and you can not dislike this pick at all for the Blazers. Outlaw has really matured into an all-around good player. The Blazers who are in total rebuild mode could get a real steal in this draft if they help develop Outlaw into the player many people think he will become.
Draft Grade: B+
9. Sacramento Kings - David Lee PF 6'9'' 249 22 B- C C- C B+ A
Another steal in the draft, this time for the Kings. David Lee will be one of those players that you will always know what production you will be getting out of him. Lee is a workhorse on the boards and could very well eventually be top 10 year in and year out in UOSLR. Lee's biggest knock is his defense but the Kings who recently acquired Tony Parker via Free Agency now have a great young core of David Lee, Dajuan Wagner and Tony Parker to build around. This team will be fun to watch for many years to come.
Draft Grade: B+
10. Indiana Pacers - Randy Foye PG 6'4'' 212 21 C+ C+ B- B- C A
The Pacers use their second lottery draft pick to choose the talented combo guard Randy Foye. Foye is a tweener with the skill set of a SG and a PG in one. Foye is a soid value pick with the number ten pick in the draft. The Pacers do another solid job here.
Draft Grade: B
11. Detroit Pistons - Marc Gasol C 7'1'' 270 20 B C- D- C C+ B
Marc Gasol could be the best big man to come out of this draft when it's all said and done. Gasol, unlike his brother Pau, uses his bulk and strength to get into the paint. Unlike his brother Pau, you won't see any finesse in Marc's game but the big man is a surprisingly good passer just like his brother. If Marc gets developed the right way, the Pistons could have a great steal on their hands here.
Draft Grade: B
12. San Antonio Spurs - Louis Williams SG 6'2'' 175 18 C+ C+ B C+ C- B
The Spurs went with highest potential here and ended up going with combo guard Louis Williams. Williams is a very raw and young talent at just 18 years of age. The Spurs will hope that Williams can turn into the scoring talent many people believe he will be. The Spurs have been in total dissarray since the Shaquille O'Neal trade and have been rebuilding since. They get another project player in Louis Williams here
Draft Grade: C+
13. Philadelphia 76ers -FORFEIT (Hard Cap Penalty)
Draft Grade: F for fucking retarded.
14. Minnesota Timberwolves - Charlie Villanueva SF 6'11'' 240 20 B- C C- C C+ A
The Timberwolves get a steal here with Charlie Villanueva. Villanueva can play multiple positions, runs the floor well, and can pass and score. Villanueva biggest knock is his lack of defense but he can be developed into a solid defender. The Wolves should be happy with this pick and are looking to have a solid future.
Draft Grade: B+
15. Denver Nuggets -Jasion Maxiell PF 6'7'' 260 22 C+ C- C- B B- A
Jason Maxiell is another player coming over to the Nuggets in the Deshawn Stevenson trade. Maxiell will be a solid complimentary player who will dominate defensively and on the boards. Maxiell has little upside though so for someone who is coming back in a trade for all-world talent Deshawn Stevenson this grade takes a huge hit.
Draft Grade: D
1. Golden State Warriors - Deron Williams PG 6'3'' 210 21 B- B B C+ C- A
