After recently examining the league's top 5 Centers in my last article, it is only fitting that I proceed to recognize UOSLR's finest Power Forwards this season. The PF position is one of many skills, and any team with a dominant PF in the paint is sure to succeed. This was a ridiculously hard list to make because there are many PF's that are right for the #4 and #5 spots.
#1: Karl Malone - Charlotte Hornets
Stats: 28.8 ppg, 12.4 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.6 bpg, 48% FG
This was an easy decision. Look at the numbers. Karl Malone is the most dominant PF in the league, and he leads the most dominant team in the league. He is the reason why the Hornets have a 45-19 record, 29-5 at home. Malone plays excellent basketball on both sides of the court: he is the primary scoring option for a team that is stacked with good players, shoots the ball well, rebounds witht he best of them and hustles on defense.
#2. Danny Manning - Utah Jazz
Stats: 23.2 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.4 bpg, 48% FG
Manning has had a great season, despite his team having an average record going into the last few weeks. Manning manages to get some great numbers on this team even though he has to share a lot of offense with Sabonis. He isn't the most physically intimidating PF on this list but he definitely gets it done on both sidesof the court. Look for him to do some more damage in the next few seasons while he is in his prime.
#3. Roy Tarpley - Seattle Supersonics
Stats: 23.3 ppg, 10.5 rpg, .8 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.4 bpg, 45% FG
It's tough to have a guy who is rated F+ in a category up here, but hey, it doesn't affect his game t0o much. Sure, Tarpley only averages .8 assists, but he only turns it over 1.4 times per game. Tarpley has led the Sonics this season who now boast a 37-30 record, which is good for 2nd seed in the West. He is one of the taller PF's in this list, which allows him to succeed when he plays the smaller guys.
#4. Shawn Kemp - Cleveland Cavaliers
Stats: 20.5 ppg, 12.6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.9 bpg, 45% FG
The best defensive PF listed so far, and one of the best in the league. 3rd in rebounds and gets a good amount of steals and blocks per game. He's also had a great season on offense and shooting a pretty good percentage. Kemp is also doing a good job of dishing the ball with 3.5 apg.
#5. Charles Barkley - Minnesota Timberwolves
Stats: 21.3 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.3 spg, .4 bpg, 44% FG
6'6'', 250. Barkley is an undersized PF, but his stats surely don't show it. He's putting up great numbers for the Wolves this season. Barkley is specially useful because of his quickness compared to other PF's. He can beat you up inside or take you out for the jumper. He is also creating for teammates with 4.4 apg, which leads everyone in the top 5. He could up his FG% some.
Right on the Bubble: Any of these guys could have been in top 5
Benoit Benjamin:
Stats: 22 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, .7 spg, 1.3 bpg, 48% FG
The only reason Benjamin didn't make the top 5 is because he is a true C. This has affected his topg, which didn't help at all. Also, a 7-footer that grabs 10.4 rpg wasn't impressive enough to get him ahead of Barkley. Great player though, scoring in bunches for the 76ers alongside The Admiral.
Chris Webber:
Stats: 20.3 ppg, 10.9 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1 spg, 1.4 bpg, 47% FG
C-Webb is still getting better, and he will surely be one of the best PF's in the league for a while. He barely didn't make the top 5. However, C-webb is great because he can hurt you from the inside or outside and dish the ball unlike many of the bigs. He is also shooting a blistering 47% from the field, which shows his efficiency. Extremely close to being #5.
Alejandro Camby:
Stats: 20.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, .5 spg, 2.4 bpg, 47% FG
Camby has shocked all of the general managers and the comissioner of the UOSLR this season. He is playing way better than anyone expected and is leading the Magic, along with Pippen, to one of the best records in the league. He is a great scorer and defensive player, but he needed more rebounds to crack the top 5. Also extremely close to being #5.
