With the season almost half over and All-Star Weekend just around the corner, it's time to take a look at the best players in UOSLR that will be competing for the MVP award at year's end. These mid-season MVP's are leaders for their teams. They're present on a daily basis, carrying their teams, but they are also significant late in games when their teams need a bucket. Without these top 10 players in the MVP race, their teams would be in much worse shape. Let's get to it.
BTW, these rankings are a combination of personal stats AND the success the team with the player is having.
#1 - Michael Jordan - Toronto Raptors
38.4 min, 34.4 pts, 7.2 reb, 4.5 ast, 2.1 stl, 0.7 blk, 2.1 to
You have to put Michael here at number 1. He has been the best player in UOSLR for many years now. Michael can kill a team inside or out, distribute the ball very well, and is a beast on the defensive end with both steals and blocks. He is one of the better guards in the league in getting blocks, which is a nice luxury to have. Jordan has the Raptors at 3rd seed in the East with a 24-11 record, which is good for the second best record in the East. Also, let's not forget that Michael Jordan carried the Toronto Raptors to a championship and has helped them to a 69% win record over the past 6 seasons, which is good for the best win percentage since 1990 of any team, by far. This team has also been
#2 - David Robinson - Philadelphia 76ers
35.5 min, 33.1 pts, 12.6 reb, 2.3 ast, 0.6 stl, 1.8 blk, 3.1 to
Wow. Look at those number and wow. How has this guy not won a championship yet? David Robinson is a beast down low, basically scoring at will against anyone in the league. He has kept the 76ers competing for the past few seasons, but hasn't been able to put them over the top by himself. He did, however, help the 76ers to a 105-101 win over the Hornets on day 46, which was a huge win for this team.
#3 - Karl Malone - Charlotte Hornets
36.2 min, 30.5 pts, 12.3 reb, 3.3 ast, 1.2 stl, 1.7 blk, 2.0 to
Karl Malone is a man among boys in the PF position. There is no PF in the league with this guy's combination of inside scoring, defense, rebounding, and size. Malone is the leader of the Hornets amazing season so far, a 34-4 record. He's shooting an amazing percentage from the field, playing very efficiently. Also, Malone has already won a championship for the Hornets and is hungry for more. He showed this when he beasted in the Hornets 111-95 win over the Grizzlies.
#4 - Shaquille O'Neal - Vancouver Grizzlies
36.7 min, 27.3 pts, 13.0 reb, 3.8 ast, 1.0 stl, 3.6 blk, 2.9 to
The youngest guy on this list, Shaq is the hometown hero here in Vancouver. Since entering the league, Shaq has been a very strong player. This year, however, is Shaq's first season as a superstar in the league. He has been able to dominate games and will his team to some close victories on the road and at home. Shaq is ranked above some of the following players because of his worth to his team; without this monster, the Grizzlies would be nowhere near as good as they are currently. He has led the team to the amazing record of 39-3 this season.
#5 - Charles Barkley - Golden State Warriors
36.5 min, 28.2 pts, 11.7 reb, 5.2 ast, 1.4 stl, 0.5 blk, 3.8 to
Charles Barkley may not have the most desirable body, because of his height, for the PF position. He is 6'6, but don't forget that he weighs 250 lbs and plays with serious muscle down low. Barkley has had an amazing time playing in the Bay Area since he moved there putting up great numbers. He is a great finisher inside, but he is also unique as a PF because he can go outside and drain the 3. Barkley is definitely the glue that holds this GS team together, giving them a 21-18 record so far, but he is not ranked any higher than 5 because of his lack of defensive stats.
#6 - Glen Rice - Detroit Pistons
39.9 min, 30.2 pts, 6.0 reb, 4.1 ast, 1.4 stl, 0.4 blk, 2.3 to
Glen Rice is a spectacular scorer from anywhere on the court, especially from the outside. He is not hesitant about shooting shots because of his confidence in his shooting abilities. Rice has kept this Pistons team competitive for many years, but this year the team has taken a turn for the worst for some reason. However, Glen Rice is still allowing them to win some games, and without him, this team would be very poor.
#7 - Drazen Petrovic - Portland Trailblazers
38.0 min, 28.8 pts, 5.6 reb, 4.3 ast, 2.1 stl, 0.2 blk, 2.6 to
DP has been playing out of his mind this season, shooting lights out AND playing great defense for the Blazers. This team owes most of its wins to Drazen because without him, I don't see this team having any success at all this season. There are rumors that the Blazers are attempting to move this stud, so if anyone is looking for a player to put them over the top, look no further.
#8 - Vernon Maxwell - Boston Celtics
37.7 min, 27.6 pts, 6.1 reb, 3.3 ast, 2.3 stl, 0.1 blk, 1.7 to
Maxwell is a beast at the SG position. He can possibly make second team all league AND first team defensive, which is noteworthy. Vernon and his team aren't having as much success as usual this season, but he is definitely still the team's MVP, carrying them with his great outside shooting and defensive abilities. Also a low turnover guy for someone with such significant offensive responsibilities.
#9 - Sam Cassell - Atlanta Hawks
39.1 min, 25.4 pts, 4.8 reb, 10.6 ast, 1.9 stl, 0.2 blk, 1.7 to
Cassell has had an amazing year so far. He has the Hawks up at 5th seed in the East with a 20-18 record. His numbers are amazing for a 3rd year guy; he is second in the league is assists, scores a bunch, and plays awesome defense. Very balanced player at a very early age. Hawks have a great future in this guy for sure.
#10 - Etienne Preira - Chicago Bulls
35.2 min, 25.4 pts, 6.4 reb, 7.6 ast, 1.9 stl, 0.8 blk, 1.7 to
Preira is solely responsible for Chicago's success. He is carrying this team with his unique abilities all-round. He is a 6'7 PG that was an absolutely steal in the draft a few years back. However, the past Gm did not extend his second round contract to gain birds on this guy, and the new Bulls GM didn't miss a beat, signing this guy to max money, which he definitely deserves. Preira can score, revound, dish the ball, get steals, and block. Amazing player, one that's very tough to come by.
