UOSLR DIVISIONAL AWARDS
Ok the season is nearly half over and well I thought Id do a Mid Season Award Article using the End of Season outline. I`ve done one for each division just to see how things look. Take a wee gander hehehe
ATLANTIC DIVISION
Most Valuable Player
Chris Webber
The Washington Bullets have gone through so many changes the last few seasons you dont know who is coming or going. The one constant however is 3 time All Star Chris Webber who has helped see his team to a 22-15 record so far this season. Gone this season are Hakeem, Charles Barkley, Reggie Lewis and Pooh Richardson leaving CWebb to be the leader once again. He has done that admirably doing a little bit of everything. So far this season he has averaged 26 pts (Career best) , 10 rebs, 5 assts ( Career best and best among big men) and 2,2( Career best) blks a game!! It was close between him and the Mailman but Id have to give it to CWebb for the mid season, ya never know, the Mailman might take it at seasons end.
Defensive Player:
Dale Davis
I had to go with Dale Davis, he is averaging 11 rebs and 3.2 blocks a game for the Bullets after spending most of last season backing up the Dream and CWebb. This season he has had to man the
middle and has done a very good job for the Bullets. Another choice was Chauncey Billups for the Nets who was averaging 2 stls and 5 rebs for the Nets. Overall it was pretty hard to pick a standout defensive performer as the Heat and 76ers were the only teams in the division that gives up less than 100 ppg.
Rookie:
Larry Hughes
The Atlantic Division had a host of rookies with the likes of Antawn Jamison, Stephon Marbury, Michael Dickerson, Brad Miller and Ricky Davis all playing in this division. The leading rookie for me would have to be Larry Hughes who is playing at point for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are a very young team and Hughes is prob benefiting from his teams rebuilding mode. They have Ricky Davis, Brad Miller, Bruno Sundov and Jerome James all on their roster and if they develop along with Big Z could be a very formiddable team. Hughes on the season has been averaging 11 pts, 4 rebs, 1 stl and 6 assts a game, which at 19 years of age shows a very level headed athlete. Notable mention would have to go to Michael Dickerson, who on the Nets is averaging 12 pts, 5 rebs a game whilst shooting 47% from the field.
All Atlantic First Team
C Zydrunas Ilgauskas Celtics
PF Chris Webber Bullets
SF Scottie Pippen Heat
SG Stephen Jackson 76ers
PG Chauncey Billups Nets
This would be my first team for the mid season awards. When you take a look at the division, the Heat seem to be the only team looking at winning now. The Bullets have traded away their ageing stars for a look at the future and the rest of the division looks to have a young team that is a few seasons away from competing ( 76ers, Celtics and Nets). Ilgauskas has been awesome for the Celts,
averaging 19 pts, 11 rebs and a steal and block a piece. Tarlac was unlucky to miss out on 1st team honours but has been a stand out performer this season for the 76ers. Big Z and Webber provide
the size down low with Jackson (21 pts, 6 reb, 3 assts and 1 stl) and Pippen(18 pts, 6 rebs, 3 assts, 2 stls), the athleticism on the wings. Chauncey Billups for is the standout PG in the Atlantic
division, granted its for a losing team, but 23 pts, 5 rebs, 7 assts and 2 stls a game is too hard to ignore. Its hard to keep Malone off this 5 but Webber is in his prime and set to take over the mantle.
All Atlantic Defensive Team
C Dale Davis Bullets
PF Chris Webber Bullets
SF Scottie Pippen Heat
SG Stephen Jackson 76ers
PG Chauncey Billups Nets
The only difference to this defensive unit is swapping Big Z for Dale Davis. Pippen, Jackson and Billups all average at least 2 stls and 5 rebs a game with Davis averaging 3.2 blocks a game and
11 rebs manning the middle. Webber remains in the 1st team because of his 10 rebs, 2 blks and 1 stl a game, something that would be too hard to ignore. Very solid looking lineup if ya dont say so
myself.
All Atlantic Rookie Team
C Jerome James Celtics
PF Brad Miller Celtics
SF Antawn Jamison Magic
SG Michael Dickerson Nets
PG Larry Hughes Celtics
The Atlantic Division has 5 lotto picks in it division and the Boston Celtics owned 3 of those picks and the Magic 2 as well. The Celtics have 3 representitives this season with Jerome James averaging 7 pts and 5 rebs in 17 mins whilst shooting 51% from the field. His fellow team mate Brad Miller has had a solid rookie season thus far, averaging 9 pts, 8 rebs and 2 assts in 30mins. Rookie of the year ( in my eyes) takes out the PG spot behind his 11 -ts, 4 rebs and 6 assts a game. The Celtics look to have a promising future should these guys develop along with Ricky Davis and Big Z. Michael Dickerson has had a very good season thus far averaging 12 pts, 5 rebs on on 45% shooting. Antawn Jamison rounds out the starting 5 behind his 10 pts, 7rebs and 1 assist start to the season. A very promising looking starting 5 indeed, and a 5 to watch out for the future of the LBA.
Central Division
Most Valuable Player:
Etienne Preira Bulls
Defensive Player:
Etienne Preira Bulls
For the Central Division Etienne Preira took the honor here with a great 1st half performance. He is a freak of nature and I hate to admit it, is better than Jordan was at this age or ever will be!!!
He takes the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards hands down with returns of 27 pts, 8 rebs, 9 assts, 2 stls and 2 blks a game!!! He has led his team to a 24 - 9 lead and looks like he
could take them all the way. If it wasnt for Preira, Dikembe Mutumbo would have take the defensive honours, but you cant ignore what hes done at the PG position!! There is so much talent in this div with the likes of MJ, Tim Duncan, Mcdyess, Grant Hill, Sam Cassell and Luc Longley playing, for Preira to stand head and shoulders above them is something to behold. Soak it up boys, cause you may not see another player like this guy again.
Rookie:
Nazr Mohammed PF Pistons
Nazr Mohammed takes this because the rookies in this division either play 4 mins a game or dont play at all hahahaha. A stark contrast to their counterparts in the Atlantic Division. The Pistons
are the only team in this division that arent in the hunt for the playoffs, every team is above .500 apart from the Pistons. This is why Nazr is playing well, cause he is getting the minutes to show
his worth. He is playing 28 mins a game and putting up 10 pts, 8 rebs and 1.7 assts a game. Nice work for him and something nice to add to his resume
All Central First Team
C Tim Duncan Cavaliers
PF Antonio Mcdyess Bucks
SF Larry Johnson Hornets
SG Nick Anderson Cavaliers
PG Etienne Preira Bulls
This was so hard as there is so much talent in this divsion I just closed my eyes and pulled a name out of a hat!! At C we have Tim Duncan, he is showing signs a becoming a star, averaging 16pts, 14 rebs, 2 assts and 2 blks a game. He beat out strong challenges from Mutumbo from the Bulls, Roberts from the Pacers and Sabonis from the Raptors. At PF is Antonio Mcdyess, he has been playing like a monster averaging 23 pts, 12 rebs, 4 assts and 2 blocks a game for the conference leading Bucks!! Larry Johnson comes in at SF after beating out a strong challenge from Grant Hill who has a spectacular season in his own right. Nick Anderson is in at SG, he has been amazing, totalling 27 pts, 7rebs, 4 assts and 1.8 stls a game for the Cavs. He teams up with Preira and form a very big and intimidating back court combination.
All Central Defensive Team
C Dikembe Mutumbo Bulls
PF Luke Longley Pacers
SF Larry Johnson Hornets
SG Vernon Maxwell Bulls
PG Ettien Preira Bulls
Dikembe comes into the Defensive first team behind his 10rebs, 3 blks and 1 stl a game, who knows how many shots he changes when people dare go inside. I chose Luke Longley over Alejandro
Camby because of the rebs and stls, Longley averages 14 rebs, 1 stl an 1 blk a game vs Cambys 10 rebs, 2 blks a game. Johnson keeps Hill out again ( only just) and Maxwell teams up with Preira in the back court who have combined this season for a total of 52 points, 13 rebs, 12 assts, 5 stls and 2 blocks. What a back court duo these two have been, I hope one of them gets injured
All Central Rookie Team
C Jelani McCoy Raptors
PF Nazr Mohammed Pistons
SF Matt Harpring Bulls
SG Charle Jones Hornets
PG Earl Boykins Pistons
This Rookie team doesnt look as good as the Atlantic Divisions team. Charlie Jones hasnt played any minutes this season, with Boykins and Mohammed the only 2 getting significant minutes from the Pistons. Boykins has been averaging 5 pts, 1 asst and 1 reb in I3 mins, while McCoy hasnt played much for the Raptors but has been able average a blocked shot each game. I dont know if any of these guys will ever make it in the UOSLR but if they do, it wont be on the teams they are on now. Good luck guys and see yall on the other side of the counter at McDonalds
Thats it for the Eastern Conference, from this you can see which one is out to win now and which is in a rebuilding mode. I will be looking at putting up a Western Conference Awards article soon so keep an eye out for it!!! Talk and get some discussion going, theres plenty of top stars Ive left out but thats for you guys to debate ENJOY!!!
