*Tie breakers were done by a coin flip.
Ladies and gentleman, time for a mock draft. I went by ratings with these predictions so there isn’t any fancy lottery done to decide where the picks will be, just ratings.
1. Atlanta Hawks
Chipper made a statement in an article about who he would take if he landed the 1st and 2nd picks, and I am holding him to that here. The order doesn’t matter since he has these two picks back to back. We do know Chipper has a mancrush on Terry, but is he really their point guard of the future? I said no and went with Tony Parker for the Hawks. The Frenchman is young (19) and gives the Hawks a future playmaker. He is a slasher who likes to take the ball to the hoop, and that may be a problem on this team with who they take at 2 wanting the ball and Terry, who is likely to be shifted over to the 2-guard position. But if he can develop his point guard skills, he could be a great one.

2. Atlanta hawks (via Utah Jazz)
Once again, Chipper basically made this pick for me. Continuing with the international flavor, the Hawks will take the top big man prospect in this draft with Pau Gasol, the power forward out of Spain. Gasol is an inside scorer, which should be interesting if you have Parker slashing into the lane then dumping the ball off to the big man inside. This duo would be cause nightmares for other teams and give the Hawks two building blocks for the future.
Yeah don't forgot it is this Gasol that is in the draft, not the wild-hair Laker version
3. Toronto Raptors
This is where it gets a little hairy. No doubt that saga wants Parker or Gasol, but the chances they fall are unlikely. In that same article, he said that a certain player would give his team a trio of scoring machines. Toronto has two main pieces right now, Paul Pierce and Steve Francis. Both can score and Francis can pass the ball well enough. Another scorer might give Francis another weapon and convince him to focus on reducing his turnovers, but they also have a lack of any big men on this team. There are a trio of young bigs in this draft who are looking to make an impact for a team. Eddy Curry, Kwame Brown, and Tyson Chandler. I say that Saga goes against having three scoring machines and goes for a big man. He picks Tyson Chandler, a big power forward. Tyson is 18 and is a very good defensive big. His scoring needs some work, but he has star power written all over him.
If he falls to me I am taking him just so I can use this picture
4. Washington Bullets
They have Webber, and nothing really else. They have some other young players such as Jamal Magloire and Jamal Crawford. The biggest need would appear to be small forward, and there are some very good ones available. However, I think they go for the scorer in Jason Richardson. He is still only 20 and could develop into their franchise wing that they have been wanting. I could also seem them doing a draft day trade possibly involving Webber. That would allow them to officially rebuild. Having the pick here along with another one would give them two main pieces to build around.
Can't win a dunk contest in jail
5. Dallas Mavericks
The team that won my 3-way coin flip. Dallas has their franchise piece in Tracy McGrady. However, I disagree with them about one part of their team. From the rumblings coming out of the front office in Dallas, they think that Kenyon Martin is the future at the power forward position. I do think Martin is going to be a great scorer, inside and behind the arc, but his defense and rebounding is a concern. If they are not content with Martin, I can see them going for a young power forward, such as Kwame Brown. If they are keeping Martin, I think that taking Eddy Curry would be team suicide since having both of those guys as your starting bigs, with their defense, would spell trouble for your team. So that really only leaves one choice. I think they need another scorer and a guy who can play the 2-guard position. They go with Joe Johnson. Johnson has the handles to shift over and play the position well, and he is another scorer who can take the load off of T-Mac.
This makes him look confused rather than gansterish
6. Detroit Pistons
This team is pretty bad. Outside of Artest, they don’t really have anything. They do actually have two young bigs who can produce. Nazr Mohammed is a very good scorer inside with solid post defense, but he isn’t a rebounder. Todd MacCulloch can play in the post efficiently, but isn’t a scorer. So what do they do? Their main pieces are expiring in Dumas and Cheaney. I say they let them go and actually rebuild. Gerald Wallace would provide them with two great wing defenders, but can he or Artest play against the quicker guards? I’m not sure about that. For me, they go with Kwame Brown and move Nazr Mohammed over the to the center position. Brown is young and raw, but he gives them rebounding which they need. He is worth the risk at 6.
No Kwame, you will not be #1
7. Milwaukee Bucks (via Sacramento Kings)
The Bucks have their team established, so this pick is just gravy. However, they are upset because Brown went just above them. I would say they go with one of the many small forwards available, but they would be part of a cluster fuck on the bench. They don’t need a point guard with Baron Davis on board. They could possibly trade the pick to get a more established player and possibly a big man in return. This pick will likely get some heat, but the Bucks need some big man help. They do not block many shots either (the two kinda go hand-in-hand). So they take Samuel Dalembert. Dalembert is a very good defensive big man and would take some of the pressure off McDyess in the middle. Vin Baker is a solid big man, but his defense is lacking. The Bucks go with the big to boost their interior defense.
Best hair EVER!
8. Miami Heat
This pick is easy. They have Kobe who is a beast. Okur is likely to be a mainstay at power forward for them. They do need a big man, but that can wait. They need a young point guard, but that can wait as well. First thing they do is move Kobe to shooting guard. He has B handles, so why isn’t he playing there? They then take Gerald Wallace out of Alabama. Wallace makes them a much better defensive team right away. He and Kobe can shut down other teams’ wings. Shane Battier might be a better fit due to better defense and a better shot, but Wallace is the potential pick. Those always go high.
The only difference between him in this picture and now is he has a darker stash
9. Charlotte Hornets
I really have no idea. They love Brezec and they have some young wings. They do need a point guard, but none deserve to be taken this high. Another scorer would help Mercer out, but I can’t see one going this high. For me this comes down to 2 different guys, one a year older than the other. Shane Battier is polished, but he doesn’t have much room to grow. Richard Jefferson is younger, but not by much. He might have more room to grow, but that is a big if. If he busts, it would be a bad one. They go with the safer pick and a guy who can start right away. Shane Battier is a defensive and 3-point specialist. He will provide good wing defense and can shoot the long ball some as well.
Duke does have some nice jerseys
10. Phoenix Suns (via Denver Nuggets)
They are the other winners of the coin flip. The Suns have a young team that has shown it can play some ball by sweeping the heavily favored Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. The Suns have 3 main guys that lead their team: Andre Miller, Manu Ginobili, and Lamar Odom. The problem with their pick is that they do not have a team need. They have Christian Laettner and Cuttino Mobley as their backup wings, and a backup point guard would be too high to pick here. Their weakness is found in the post. Clifford Rozier is their best post player, but he is expiring and looking for a big pay day. Maurice Taylor can only score inside and Duane Causwell can only defend. The worst part if that they are all expiring. I say they take a flier on a young big man in Eddy Curry. Curry is very raw and can only score right now, but he would give them some depth and could develop and be part of their young core.
insert your own joke
11. New York Knicks
The Knicks have their future at the 5, 4, and the 3 positions. Wang, Camby, and Marion will all be mainstays in New York. However, they still need two guards. It is their luck that there are none available. They could try the “draft a small forward and move him to the shooting guard position” trick, but I don’t see that. Trenton Hassell is probably the best shooting guard available, and he is just another 3-shooter who can play some defense. Those types are a dime a dozen. I say they take a point guard. They do need one and he is unlikely to be their future, but I don’t think there are many young “pick me, pick me” types. They go with the Puerto Rican Carlos Arroyo here. He probably won’t be a future all-star, but he is sufficient.
The lettering on this fucking sucks, you can't read it
12. Golden State Warriors
I’m not sure what the Warriors need. They have a youngish point in Damon Stoudamire, a young combo guard in Gilbert Arenas, a young small forward in Shareef-Abdur-Rahim, and a young power forward in Stromile Swift. One could argue that they need a center, but there are two problems with that. First, Sharone Wright is sufficient since he can score and defend but he is also expiring and is likely to bolt. Second, there aren’t many good centers available via the draft. However, I say they take a center because the risk of Wright bolting is high. It is either Desagana Diop or Steven Hunter. Hunter is more of the defender and a slightly better scorer, where Diop is the much better rebounder. I say they take the huge Desagana Diop as their banger to give them a big force in the paint. Right now, the 6’9” 225 lb. Swift is their main man and Hunter is skinny as well. Diop gives them a bruiser in the pain.
Do you know Where the Wild Things Are? Because Desagana does
13. Los Angeles Lakers
They want to rebuild, but don’t really have the right pieces to do so. Donyell Marshall is a good player who is very underrated. Travis Best also flies under the radar. Steve Smith is a free agent for them, but he is 31 and doesn’t play any defense. Dale Davis is also 31 and is their only real big man. What should they do? They could try and bring in another defender/rebounder big to form a beast dup with Davis in Steven Hunter. They could also try for some very raw power forwards who could develop in Al Harrington and Zach Randolph. Of course there is the option of a replacement wing in either Richard Jefferson or Trenton Hassell. I say they go for the middle option and pick a young guy. Al Harrington is a lot like Marshall in that he is a combo forward. I think him and Marshall would provide nightmare matchups for other teams.
