HERES A LOOK AT THE ROOKIES THAT WERE DRAFTED IN THE 1991 LOTTERY AND HOW
THEY ARE MANAGING IN THE UOSLR
1. Larry Johnson SF 6'7'' 250 22 UNLV
Pre-TC: B C+ C B- B A
Post-TC: B+B- C B B A
The number 1 pick in the draft had a very solid training camp and improved his shooting and defensive categories. His impact on his team has been great and has already helped them nearly reach their total number of wins from last season. He is averaging a healthy 20 pts, 8 rebs and 3 assts a game. He has 8 double doubles on the season and should find himself on the rookie 1stteam. Charlotte is still a year or so out of the playoffs but they have a
few picks in this years draft that could end up in the lottery and land them a few good prospects.
Best game: vs Hawks – 26 pts, 15 brds, 7 assts, 1 stl
Worst game: vs Spurs – 19 mins, 10 pts, 7 brds, fouled out.
2. Dikembe Mutombo C 7'2'' 245 24 Georgetown
Pre-TC: C+ D+ C- A- B+ B
Post-TC: C+ D+ D+A B+ B
The Hawks selected Dikembe at 2 and he has made a solid start to his UOSLR career. He's not a spectacular player but he does his job well and could develop into a defensive monster with-in a year. The Hawks are 14-12 on the season so far and Mutumbo has become their man in the middle. He's averaging 32 mins a game, 6pts, 9 brds, 1 stl, 3.2 blocks a game (4th in the league) and if his rebounding improves could find himself on the def team or even
def player of the year.
Best game: vs Celtics -5 pts, 5 blks, 20 brds, 3 assts
Worst game: vs Blazers – 23 mins, 0-4 shooting, 0 pts, 6 fouls, 6 brds, 1 blk
3. Steve Smith SG 6'7'' 200 22 Michigan State
Pre-TC: B- B- C+ C+ C- A
Post–TC:B- B C+ B- C- B
Steve Smith was selected by the T-Wolves at 3 is a versatile player who hasthe length and size to play SF also but is better suited at SG. He is playing along side Chinese star Hu Weidong and it seems they have a bit of a competition on to see who has the better rookie season. He leads the team in FG% at 49% and is averaging 14 pts, 5 brds, 3assts and 1.4 stls. They have a very young team so look at Steve Smith becoming their leader within the near future.
Best Game: Vs Rockets 21 pts, 7 brds, 6 assts, 2 stls
Worst game : Vs Clippers 29mins, 1-5 shooting, 2 pts, 5 turnovers, 6 assts, 5 brds.
4. Denver Nuggets - Jimmy Jackson SG 6'6'' 220 20 Ohio State
Pre-TC: C+ B+ C C+ C A
Post-TC:B- B+ C C+ C B
Jimmy Jackson is a SG who can flat out score. He has been sharing time with Jeff Malone who will probably make way for Jimmy next season. The team is in rebuilding mode and Jimmy Jackson can benefit from that as there is no pressure on him to win right away. Lets hope he doesn't get used to it though. He is 2nd on the team in scoring 14 pts a game (behind Vlade) playing only 27 mins a game and averaging 5 brds, 3 assts and 1 stl a game. Look to see Jackson improve his def if he is to become a solid starter in this league.
Best game – vs Clippers: 34 mins, 13-22 shooting, 28 pts, 9 brds, 6 assts, 3 stls.
Worst game - vs Mavericks: 23 mins, 3-14 shooting, 8pts, 4 brds, 6 fouls.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers - Kenny Anderson PG 6'1'' 170 20 Georgia Tech
Pre-TC: C+ B- B- C+ C- A
Post-TC:C+ B C+ B+ C A
Kenny Anderson was the first PG in the 91 draft, selected by the Nets as a player to feed Shawn Kemp down low. His shooting and def improved during training camp, but his handling declined, and that's not what you want in your PG. He started off the season coming off the bench but has found his way into the starting lineup. He has shown glimpses of what he did in college and with another decent TC, he could becoming a solid PG. Hisaverages so far this season are 28 mins, 11 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assts and 1 stl. He still has some potential for him to improve but whether or not he realizes it is his choice.
Best game: vs Suns 8-16 shooting, 21 pts, 7 rebs, 6 assts, 2 stls.
Worst game: vs Sonics 0-6 shooting, 0 pts, 8 rebs, 5 assts, 2 tos.
6. Orlando Magic - Billy Owens SF 6'8'' 220 22 Syracuse
Pre-TC: B C C B B- A
Post–TC: B C+ C B+ C+ B
Next up is Billy Owens who was drafted by the Orlando Magic. He had improvements in his outside shooting and def in training camps, but that wasn't enough to force his way into the starting lineup. He's been averaging close to 20mins a game off the bench with 9 pts, 4 brds and 1 stl a game. With Pippen at SF, Owens best chance is work on his outside shot and try to take Jerry Reynolds spot at SG.
Best game: vs Heat, 19 mins, 6-12 shooting, 2-2 3pt, 17 pts, 3 rebs, 1 asst, 1 stl
Worst game: vs Hornets, 17mins, 2pts, 2 rebs, 4 assts.
7. Phoenix Suns - Stacey Augmon SG 6'6'' 205 22 UNLV
Pre-TC: B C C A- C A
Post-TC:B C C A C B
From a successful college program to a struggling franchise, Stacey Augmon has been playing SF this season and has been solid if not spectacular. Maybe a stint at SG might see him improve his stats, but with Hersey Hawkins there and his average outside shooting, SF is where he will ply his trade in the UOSLR. He has started this season and has averages of 7pts, 5 brds, 1 asst, 1,9 stls. If he can improve on his 39% shooting, then he will become a solid player and could make All Rookie 2nd team.
Best game: vs Pacers, 36 mins, 6-10 shooting, 14 pts, 10 brds, 3 stls 1 TO
Worst game: vs Nuggets 33 mins, 0-4 shooting, 0 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assts, 2 blks, 2 TO
8. Houston Rockets - Dale Davis PF 6'11'' 230 22 Clemson
Pre-TC: C+ D+ D- B B A
Post-TC:B- D+ D- B B A
The 1st PF selected was Dale Davis and he showed his eagerness to succeed with an improvement on his inside shooting during TC. His .487 shooting is 2nd best on the team behind James Worthy but his FT shooting is the worst at .510. He is the only post presence on this team defensive and rebounding wise and he is taking time adjusting to the pressure. If he can stay on the court longer and not get into foul trouble you could see him improve on his 9.8 pts, 8 rebs, 1blk averages.
Best game: vs Twolves – 7-16 shooting, 19 pts, 13 brds, 5 assts, 1 blk
Worst game: Vs Twoves – 12 mins, 1-4 shooting, 3 pts, 3 brds, 1 blk 4 fouls.
9. Los Angeles Lakers - Greg Anthony PG 6'1'' 175 23 UNLV
Pre TC: C C B- A- D+ B
Post TC:C C B- A- D+ B
The 3rd of the UNLV players did not improve at all in TCs and has not seen any playing time behind one of the Top PGs in the league, Michael Adams. It looks like he will be seeking a trade before the deadline and has been a disturbance in the locker room. Reports of throwing equipment around and questioning the sexual preferences of GM Claatsch have been linked to Anthony. Only time will tell as to how long he will be in a Lakers uniform.
10. Dallas Mavericks - Rick Fox SF 6'7'' 230 21 North Carolina
Pre-TC: C+ B- C B C B
Post-TC: C+ B- C B C B
Rounding out the top 10 is Rick Fox at SF. He stayed the same after TC and came into the roster as one of their better outside shooters. He has forced his way into the starting line up ( which isnt hard considering Gerald Wilkins was their starter last season) and has become one of their team leaders. He is shooting the ball at 46% and averaging 12 pts, 6 rebs and 3 assts a game. " We couldnt have a better player at SF than Rick Fox, he has come in and bought into our philosophy of team ball, and its working" said Rod Strickland who is loving the play of the young Canadian.
Best Game: Vs Hornets, 33 mins, 10-13 shooting. 29 pts, 8 rebs, 2 stls.
Worst Game: vs Raptors, 23 mins, 1-9 shooting, 3 pts, 5 brds, 4 fouls.
11.Detroit Pistons -Luc Longley C 7'2'' 265 22 New Mexico
Pre-TC: C+ C- D B+ B- B
Post-TC: C+ C- D A- B+ B
Luc Longley comes in at 11 from Australia via New Mexico. This guy has a big frame and is a space eater who is a solid def and rebounder. He is averaging 8 pts, 9 rebs, 2 assts and 2 blocks a game for the Pistons. He is their big man in the middle and needs to show some offence down low in order to free up the perimeter for his sharp shooting team mates Glen Rice, Mark Price and A.J English. Hes been named player of the game once and has 9 double doubles. If he can develop the offensive side of his game, he could become a very good big man in the coming years.
Best Game: Vs Knicks, 36 mins, 6-8 shooting, 19 pts, 21 brds, 2 stls, 3 blks
Worst Game: Vs Warriors, 20 mins, 2pts, 6 brds, 3 assts, fouled out.
12. Miami Heat - Eric Murdock PG 6'1'' 190 23 Providence
Pre-TC: C B+ B C+ C- B
Post-TC:C A- B B- C- B
This Providence star could be the steal of the draft. He has taken Vinnie Johnsons place as floor leader and flourished under GM Derwin. He has logged in 35 mins a game averaging 13 pts, 8 assts, 3 reb and 2 stls a game whilst shooting 46%(7th in the league) from behind the arc and 48 % overall. He and Dan Majerle have clicked almost instantly since the season began and have become one of the up and coming back court duos in the league. He has already won Rookie of the Month honours and could make all rookie 1st team and even rookie of the year if he keeps this up.
Best game: vs TWolves, 34 mins, 10-15 shooting, 3-3 3pt, 27 pts, 10 assts, 5 brds, 0 TOs.
Worst game: vs 6ers, 33 mins, 0-11 shooting , 0 pts, 3 TOs, 4 stls, 4assts.
13.Milwaukee Bucks - Predrag Danilovic SG 6'5'' 200 21 Bosnia-Herzegovina
Pre-TC: C A- C C C A
Post-TC:C+ A- C C C B
Rounding out the lottery was Predrag from Bosnia. He hasnt had the best of starts to his UOSLR career but it could be worse, he could have been in Greg Anthonys position Predrag has been playing behind 2nd year SF Sean Elliot and hasnt had much chances, he has impressed with his limited time, and shown he can score in bunches. If he wants to last in the league, hes going to have to improve his def and find a team where he can play SG. If not he could be used here or there at all-star games as a 3pt shootout contestant ( like Craig Hodges, lol)
Best game: Vs Raptors, 19 mins, 4-6 shooting, 2-3 3pt, 11 pts, 3 rebs, 1 stl, 1 blk
Worst game: Vs Pacers, 19 mins, 1-3 shooting, 2 pts, 1 stl, 1 asst, 1 brd.
Other Notables
Arvydas Sabonis(Lithuania) C 27 7-3 280lbs
Pre-TC: B C+ C B+ B B
Post-TC:B C+ C B+ B+ B
Came into the league via FA and is prob an early favourite for Rookie of the Year. At 27 years of age hes not really a rookie but because its his 1st year hes showing hes more than that. Starring in Europe, Sabonis has entered the UOSLR and is making noise already. Hes prob a lock for ROY and will prob oust Dikembe out of rookie 1st team honors. At this rate he may even make 3rd team all UOSLR. He is averaging 23 pts, 10 rebs, 4 assts, 1 stl, 1 blk at 47% from the field and 48% from behind the arc. Even though he is a slow mover he has the skill and awareness to put the ball wherever he wants. He has won ROM, has won 11 player of the game awards and has 12 double doubles.
Best Game: Vs Magic , 41 mins, 13-23 shooting, 35 pts, 13 rebs, 10 assts and 2 stls
Worst Game: Vs Kings, 29 mins, 5-15 shooting, 13 pts, 5 fouls, 4 assts, 6 rebs, 2 TOs.
Hu Weidong(China) SG 22 6-6 190lbs
Pre-TC:B B C B- D B
Post-TC: B- B+ C B D B
The Wolves managed to secure the services of Weidong via the FA and have teamed him up with Steve Smith, another rookie who is making noise in the league this year. Hu has taken to the league like a fish to water and hasnt slowed down. He leads his team in scoring at 18 pts a game along with 3 rebs, 2 assts and 1 stl. The twolves look lotto bound again and if they get another young star such as Zo or Shaq, they could be very scary in a couple of years.
Best Game: Vs Braves, 35 mins, 11-19 shooting, 29 pts, 5 rebs, 3 assts, 0 TOs
Worst Game: Vs Lakers , 23 mins, 2-11 shooting, 8 pts, 4 fouls, 3 tos.
Thats it for now, Im Saga etc signing off.. Catch ya on the reb!!!!
