*These stats are from yesterday and today’s sim so some things may be off (the beginning ones are not recently updated).
Washington, D.C., Feb. 19, 2009- Who is gonna win what?
MVP: Hakeem Olajuwon
-Dream goes for a repeat here. It might be homerish but it is hard to go against this guy. He is 2nd in the league with ppg and one of only 2 over 30 ppg, he is leading rebounds per game by almost 2 rebounds per game, and he is ahead on blocks per game by .8. He is putting up numbers very similar to last season, only with more rebounds per game. The thing hurting him is his lack of players of the week and players of the month. Michael Jordan will give Dream a run for his money with more points per game as well as his superb defensive capabilities. Jordan does have two players of the month compared to none for Dream, but is almost impossible to pass up a guy who is only second in points per game and is leading blocks and rebounds per game by large margains. If Jordan was averaging 40 ppg (compared to his 34.5, only a .6 difference from Dream), then I would put him here. But it is close, and the secondary stats come into play for me. That is what pushes Dream over the edge.
Defensive Player of the Year: Hakeem Olajuwon
-Dream again. 4.4 blocks per game speaks for themselves. He is the best shot blocker in the league by far. John Stockton might give him a run for his money with his ball stealing, which is first in the league.
Rookie of the Year: Arvydas Sabonis
-He really isn’t a rookie since he has been playing overseas but technically he is. He is a double-double player who has the Jazz in the playoff hunt. My pick for real rookie goes to Larry Johnson of the Hornets. Over 20 points and 8 rebounds a game is nice. Those stats might be a tad inflated due to him being on the Hornets but never less, they are nice stats.
Who likes short shorts?
Larry thinks they are #1
All-League First Team
Center: Hakeem Olajuwon
-MVP and DPOTY goes here.
Power Forward: Karl Malone
-The Mailman. He is putting up an almost 30/12 statline. He is first in point per game for power forwards and second to Roy Tarpley in rebounds per game. His biggest knock is that he isn’t a shot blocker, but this isn’t the defensive first-team now is it?
Don't mess with the Mailman brother!
Small Forward: Glen Rice
-The 24 year old is leading small forwards for points per game. He isn’t putting up great assist numbers but okay. He also can’t play defensive worth a lick but that’s okay, he can do whatever he wants. If Larry Bird can up his points per game he will surpass Rice since he is better overall.
A newcomer to the First Team stage, Rice is pissed off about something. Maybe because he just beat the shit out of a guy?
Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan
-The runner-up to the MVP still gets an all-league first team spot. He is a stud scorer who can rebound, dish, and steal the ball. Great player.
Lil' Mike
Point Guard: Michael Adams
-I wanted to go with Stockton but it is hard to pass up Adams ability to score. He isn’t as good as Stockton in the other key point guard areas, but he isn’t that far behind either. There is a chance he is shipped off, which may push him out of this spot as he isn’t the go to option anymore, however he will still get his fair share of points.
All-Defensive First Team
Center: Hakeem Olajuwon
-I know you hate me for putting him here but his blocking ability is great. He is an A+ defender who also gets over a steal a game.
Power Forward: Larry Nance
-Dice territory now. There is another guy, playing out of position, who gets more steals than Nance. However, Nance’s ability to block shots as well and steal the ball gets him the nod. If Pippen was a better shot blocker, then he would likely get the nod. But that is what playing out of positions gets you, shafted on the awards.
Small Forward: Vernon Maxwell
-Playing alongside Dream has its benefits. Players are so afraid to take the ball into the lane, Maxwell can sit on the perimeter and pick the ball away. Averaging 2.9 steals per game, he is only second to Stockton in that department. He is a bit small and lacks the size to be a dominant force on the boards, but is good enough. If Pippen was starting at the 3 instead of the 4, there is no doubt he would be here with better overall defensive stats.
Don’t fuck with Mad Max. He will run into the stands and punch you, then give you herpes.
Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan
-Jordan v.s. Dream is a studly awards race.
Point Guard: John Stockton
-My pick for All-League second team point guard also gets an award for Defensive First team. He is leading the Warriors with his knack for dishing the ball as well as picking it. If he was a better scorer he would replace Adams, but he isn’t. However he is doing just fine dishing it to Daugherty inside.
I got nothing.
