When Denver was taken over by Mops in 1990 his plan was to tear the team down and over a year period collect as many talented youth as possible through the draft and free agency.
After bringing in the assisant GM Ducky who has been known to rebuild many programs the plan was in place as the Nuggets had Sherman Douglas and Vlade Divac in the first season.
In the 1991 draft Denver selected Jimmy Jackson with the 4th pick and Jackson instantly became a hit in Mile High City as he went on to win the Rookie Game MVP and being named to the Rookie Second team.
During the 1991 season the Nuggets also brought in Cedric Ceballos while also giving more minutes to Danny Ferry and Dennis Scott at PF spots.
Then in the 1992 draft the Nuggets again having the 4th pick in the draft selected Oregon point guard Terrell Brandon.
With two top 5 picks paired up with Vlade Divac and Sherman Douglas the Nuggets are in interesting waters. The Nuggets play in the weak Mid-West Division and sit on top with a 6-4 season this early and no other teams above .500 do the Nuggets continue to try and win games ahead of the time frame set in place or do they make some moves to get weaker now to be better in the future?
Its clear the Nuggets have a deadly back court in training wheels as Brandon, Jackson, and Douglas are playing above expectations. They combine for 53.1 ppg, 15.1 rpg, and 14 apg. Points and Assists are more than half the Nuggets average per game.
With the back court all but set right now it's clear the Nuggets need to working finding players to fill the forward spots to help center Divac down low where Divac is holding is own but very out manned night in and night out.
With the 1993 Draft coming up and Shaquille Oneil, Chris Webber, Vin Baker, Penny Hardaway, Rodney Rodgers, and Issah Rider all possible draft picks in this upcoming draft the Nuggets could find a perfect fit for a SF or PF spot in the line up that could take the Nuggets to the next level.
Do they tank or do they win?
