There are 120 teams in college football with 6 major conferences of Big Ten (11), SEC (12), Pac 10 (10), Big 12 (12), ACC (12), & Big East (8) totaling 65 teams plus Notre Dame.
I propose to add 15 'mid-major' teams to those 65+1 by consolidating college football into 5 16-team super conferences, the lucky 15 are:
o 9 CUSA - UCF, ECU, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa
o 5 MWC- BYU, SDSU, TCU, UNLV, Utah
o 1 WAC - Boise State
The 5 winners of each super conference receive auto-bids to play in the BCS Playoffs with 3 at-large teams. The quarterfinals will take place at the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, & Rose bowls. Winners will advance to the semi-finals & then the NCAA Football Championship Game. Teams not in the BCS Playoffs will continue to play in the Cotton, Papa Johns.com, Peach, & Gaylord Hotels bowls.
Super conference teams play 7 division games & 2 other division games by rotating home-and-away series every 4 years for a total of 9 conference games.
So Florida plays every year:
Clemson
Florida State
Georgia
Georgia Tech
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Out of division:
Alabama in 2011/15
Arkansas in 2011/15
Auburn in 2012/16
Kentucky in 2012/16
LSU in 2013/17
Louisville in 2013/17
Ole Miss in 2014/18
Miss State in 2014/18
It all starts off with the Big Ten and it trickles down through everything but the MAC. Big East football & C-USA cease to exist.
• Big Ten expands to add a championship game, adds 5 to maximize Northeast TV market & football revenue:
o Missouri – Big 12 North 1996
o Nebraska – Big 12 North 1996
o Rutgers – Big East 1991
o Syracuse – Big East 1991
o Pitt – Big East 1991
• Pac-10 expands to add a championship game, adds 6 to match new Big Sixteen by adding the west’s best teams:
o Colorado – Big 12 North 1996
o Utah – MWC 1999 (WAC 1962-99)
o BYU – MWC 1999 (WAC 1962-99)
o San Diego State – MWC 1999 (WAC 1978-99)
o UNLV – MWC 1999 (WAC 1996-99)
o Boise State – WAC 2001
• SEC responds by adding 2nd teams in SC, GA, FL & KY to reach 16, leaving only LSU & Arkansas w/o an instate rival:
o Clemson – ACC 1953
o Florida State – ACC 1991
o Georgia Tech – ACC 1978 (SEC from 1932-64)
o Louisville – Big East 2005 (CUSA 1995-05)
• Big 12 makes up for 3 lost members by recreating the SWC as an all Texas division & adding half of CUSA’s teams:
o Texas Christian – MWC 2005 (SWC 1923-96, WAC 96-01, CUSA 01-05)
o SMU – CUSA West 2005 (SWC 1918-96)
o Rice – CUSA West 2005 (SWC 1915-96)
o Houston – CUSA West 1996 (SWC 1971-96)
o Tulane – CUSA West 1995
o Tulsa – CUSA West 2005
o Memphis – CUSA East 1995
• ACC also lost 3 members to expansion – absorbs the leftover 4 Big East teams & adds 3 CUSA teams to become 16:
o West Virginia – Big East 1991
o UConn – Big East 2004
o South Florida – Big East 2005 (CUSA 1995-05)
o Cincinnati – Big East 2005 (CUSA 1995-05)
o East Carolina – CUSA East 1997
o UCF – CUSA East 2005
o Marshall – CUSA East 2005
• Mountain West’s 4 leftover teams reunite with WAC’s 7 teams by merging & adding UTEP from CUSA to reach 12:
o New Mexico– MWC 1999 (WAC 1962-99)
o Wyoming – MWC 1999 (WAC 1962-99)
o Colorado State – MWC 1999 (WAC 1967-99)
o Air Force – MWC 1999 (WAC 1980-99)
o UTEP –CUSA West 1995 (WAC 1967-95)
• Sunbelt expands to 12 by absorbing the 2 remaining C-USA teams & Louisiana Tech’s move East from the WAC:
o Louisiana Tech – WAC 2001
o Southern Miss – CUSA East 1995
o UAB – CUSA East 1995
