Its been 4 years since the last time I updated this power rankings, which means one set of Rookies has been drafted and gone through FA. At last check, it was all Grizzlies, as they killed the rest of the league in overall points by a wide margin, giving themselves a lead that was going to be very very difficult to pass up in just four years. Even with the departure of Vancouver GM csdude, the Grizzlies managed to keep their stranglehold on the number 1 spot, actually widening it slightly, up to a 195 point lead from a 161 point lead. The Pacers were the dominant team in this era, getting themselves 434 points, which is an average of 108.25 exactly tied with the Chicago Bulls for highest average in league history….however the Bulls gained the benefit of the division title points and conference title points being added in. meaning we just witnessed the most dominant stretch in the history of these rankings. For the first time in the four times I have written this article, the Bulls are not the defending champion, but rather, well, myself, winning the title over the Portland Trailblazers.
While I looked at changing the formula, I feel as though this one is fair enough, and anybody who doesn’t like it I don’t care really, I think it balances out well enough right now A title is big, but this is more about consistency and overall excellence.
I gave teams
1 point for a regular season win
2 points for a playoff win
4 points for a Division Title
5 points for a playoff appearance
8 Points for a Conference Title (including the 4 for a Division Title)
10 points for a finals appearance
25 points for a title
That means a first round playoff appearance is worth 5-11 points (5 for the appearance + up to three wins at two points each) 2nd round is 13-19 points, Conference Championship 21-27, a Finals appearance is worth 39-45, and a title is worth 72 points, due to the wins. The most possible points in the regular season would be 90, and the most possible points in the playoffs 72. Without further hesitation, I present the overall Rankings.

- Of the Top 10 5 are from the East, 5 are from the West
- However, 4 of the Top 6 are Eastern Conference Teams
- Strongest conference? Both as the two conferences both have an average rank of 15.
- Strongest Division? The Central Division in the East…With 4 of the top 6 teams in the power rankings, you better be strong if you are going to contend, teams in the Central averaged 13.38. Runner up is the Pacific, which made a large jump up to an average of 13.85, third is the Midwest at 16.14, and the rear is brought up by the Atlantic at 16.85.
- The Pacific is definitely on the rise, jumping up to the second overall division, and it has the strongest weak team in the Kings.
- The Central is a very top strong conference with 4 teams in the top 6 overall, and then two more sitting 18th and 19th….which makes it not surprising in the least that it also houses the weakest team in the leagues history, the Detroit Pistons
- The Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks had been the bottom two teams in the first updates, ranking 28th and 29th respectively in all updates, but both have managed to find thei way out of the cellar, with the Mavericks moving slightly ahead of the Pistons, and the Hawks climbing up to 25th overall.
- Winning a title obviously helps out a teams score, as the Clippers moved from 19th to 9th and the Nets moved from 16th to 10th, but the Trailblazers showed that a couple of Finals appearances can still help, moving up 9 spots, which is good considering they had lost seven spots last time I updated this
- The Milwaukee Bucks are the only team to improve in all three of the power rankings updates…they were the only team to improve in the first two already, and gained a spot to fifth in this update
- Meanwhile the Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, and Detroit Pistons have lost spots in each edition of this power ranking
- Chicago has won 5 division titles….and 5 conference titles, never having ended up second best in the conference, they have the highest number while doing this, however, 2 other teams can claim the same 100% ratio: Minnesota (3-3), Cleveland (1-1)…all of those teams are in top heavy dominant divisions.
- Most playoff appearances with no title? Seattle, with 19 appearances but no Championship…they also lead in most appearances without a finals berth obviously… The 76ers are runner up to them in both categories…of interest about that? Tmac has had two stints in the league, one with the Supersonics, and now with the 76ers
- I am missing one years conference results it would appear, not sure which one, but, as it appears now, 4 teams have not won a division or conference title…Denver, Detroit, Utah, Mavericks….each of those teams are ranked nineteenth or worse, and three of them rank as the worst three teams
- 20th-29th place in the rankings: 11 division titles 3 conference titles…1st-10th place in the rankings: 53 Division Titles, 32 Conference Titles…says a lot…. oh and 11th-19th 24 Division Titles 9 Conference Titles
- For Kru: Teams with one GM throughout the history of the league sit 3, 6, 12, 13, 20, 21, 22, 23
