2011 Draft in Review
The 2011 Draft was one defined by busts and the 20 ppg B- outside scorer. Oh Yeah, and that Perry Jones guy. It was a huge draft for teams in the early lotto with a lot of nice players, but late in the lotto, teams were pretty much screwed. There was a reach in the top 5 that busted, and a later round steal or two. It wasn’t the strongest draft in league history, nor was it the weakest by any means, pretty much it was just an average draft, with a big time player and a lot of nice ones early.New York had a ton of firsts in this draft, including the most important one, first overall. Perry Jones was thought to be the savior of New York basketball, but to this point it hasn’t happened, and now there are rumours that Perry has been put on the block, leading to speculation that he is unhappy with the New York media, which has been on him quite hard due to the lack of a title while he has been there, and that Perry may be looking to leave New York this offseason.
FIRST ROUND
1 - New York Knicks -
Perry Jones SF 6'11'' 230 20 B C+ C B B- A
Perry Jones SF 23 6'11'' 230 A- A- C A B B
The clear number one pick in the 2011 draft had stud written all over him, and has lived up to the hype. Perry Jones has been dominant since he entered the league, and is still improving. His game has few weaknesses if any. He can score inside and out, knock down free throws, defend and rebound. He can even block shots and steal. Not too many players can hold a candle to Perry’s pure amazingness. Perry is clearly the best player to come out of this draft and it really isn’t close, not necessarily because this draft was weak, but because he is so good. Any team who has a max to offer him if he tests this offseason and chooses not to should be fired. DB made the obvious best choice.
2 - Seattle Supersonics -
Avery Bradley PG 6'2'' 180 21 B+ C C B+ D+ A
Avery Bradley SG 24 6'2'' 180 A- B- C B+ D+ B
Avery hasn’t really changed much ratings wise, only pulling a plus three, but he is a very nice player. His Free throw shooting is a bit weak, and his turnovers are definitely a big problem considering he is a Shooting Guard. Bradley is a nice player, and his steals are sick, but it is questionable whether he is a franchise player, or just a complimentary player. Unless his new team manages to assist him with that turnover problem, I am thinking he is the latter. If he chooses to test FA he is going to get paid, which is tough for the Warriors with having Selby and Bradley coming off this year.
3 - Toronto Raptors -
Trey Thompkins PF 6'9'' 245 21 B C C- C+ C+ A
Trey Thompkins PF 24 6'9'' 245 B+ C C- B+ B+ C
Trey Thompkins was sort of a surprise at #3 overall by the Raptors, but, the Raptors had worked him out against some of the other posts, and had been blown away by how well he performed. His ratings are still a bit short of superstar status, and while he has a C outside, he really isn’t a ft shooter that you would want out of a post with that rating, rather he tends to shoot the three on occasion. He is an excellent player when it comes to taking care of the ball, and he blocks shots pretty well inside. His scoring is lower, but his percentages are quite nice, all in all this was a nice pick for the Raptors, but the hope is that he will have a bit more progression in his game if they are to pay him a big contract this offseason.
4 - New Jersey Nets -
Josh Selby SG 6'1'' 180 19 B+ C+ C B- D A
Josh Selby SG 22 6'2'' 180 A- B- C B+ C- A
Selby had question marks as to his ability to avoid turnovers and it was made pretty clear he would never be a point guard but would have to play as an undersized Shooting Guard for his career. He has definitely worked on improving his game, but he has spent maybe a bit too much time focusing on improving his poor rebounding. His defense has taken a nice step forward, and his offense has improved some, but overall he still needs to improve if he is going to be a star in the league. He has a more jump shooting oriented outside, but his FT percentage is not all that great. His turnovers have also been a problem. Really Selby is very similar to Avery Bradley, Bradley just steals more and scores a bit more, while Selby is a better positional defender, passer, and rebounder. Fitting that they end up together on the same team, but those turnovers are going to be very hard to deal with, and I don’t see them complimenting each other very well to be honest, will be intriguing to see how the Warriors deal with the resigning this offseason.
5 - Cleveland Cavaliers -
Jordan Hamilton SF 6'7'' 210 21 B B- C- C C- A
Jordan Hamilton SF 24 6'7'' 210 B+ B- C C+ C B
Bust…Cleveland got pretty well slammed for this pick, by one GM claiming he should have taken John Henson over Jordan (woulda sucked either way), and many for just thinking he was a reach. All in all, guess what…he busted. Honestly he isn’t an awful player offensively ratings wise, with similar ratings to many of the players taken in the top 6, but his Defense makes him pretty bad….still better than John Henson though. Leslie would have been a much better pick for the Cavs…had they selected him, maybe they could have put up a fight against the Clippers in the finals.
6 - Milwaukee Bucks -
Travis Leslie SG 6'4'' 202 21 B C- D+ B+ C+ A
Travis Leslie SF 24 6'4'' 202 B+ B- C A- B- C
Leslie is pretty damned sick. His FG% is currently down, but 22 points 8 boards 1.4 steals 1 block per game out of your SF is a sick set of numbers. I would have to say Leslie is the second best player out of this draft, as he is great at controlling his turnovers. Leslies biggest weakness has to be his 3 point shot, of which he doesn’t really have a great one, but he has a very nice midrange game and a great inside game. He is definitely an undersized SF in the mold of a Ronnie Fields, but still is another great pick by Kru, who has to be nervous about this coming offseason, though Greg Monroe gave the Bucks a huge favor this last offseason when he resigned for cheap helping the Bucks with their hard cap space to resign Leslie.
7 - Atlanta Hawks -
Brandon Knight PG 6'3'' 185 20 C+ C+ B- B- C- A
Brandon Knight SG 23 6'3'' 185 C+ A- A- C+ C- B
Brandon Knight looked like a top 5 pick, but ended up sliding past the Cavaliers and Bucks at 5 and 6 to the Hawks at 7. It appeared the Hawks had gotten an absolute steal, as Knight looked like he was going to be a stud PG, but Knight has struggled to develop into much more than a good backup PG. His defense has surprisingly not improved much, while he focused on trying to become more of a scoring Point Guard. Atlanta was really in a tough spot here though, it was clear that Knight was the best player available at this point, and really he is still better than Kemba Walker probably, but Knight has turnover problems as well, which hinders his ability to play PG effectively. I don’t see the Hawks paying Knight a big contract this offseason, but I have been known to be wrong.
8 - Milwaukee Bucks -
John Henson PF 6'10'' 200 20 B- C- C- B- C+ A
John Henson PF 23 6'10'' 200 C+ C- D B C+ C
Like I just said, I have been known to be wrong, and this is definitely a pick I was wrong about. John Henson busted hard. A late entry into the draft, giving teams not much info to work with Henson looked like a raw SF/PF combo. Henson has been a nothing though, never really garnering any playing time outside some bench work his rookie season. Hell I was even wrong about him being a shot blocker..while he could block a shot or two, he really wasn’t a force. Overall Henson has gone -2 since he entered the league…disgusting.
9 - Houston Rockets -
Soloman Alabi C 7'1'' 251 23 C+ D+ D- B C+ B
Soloman Alabi C 26 7'1'' 256 C+ D+ D B- B- C
Another bust, something that the back half of the lotto in this draft had many of. Soloman was not a good player, kicking off with a nothing TC was the first sign that he would do nothing, and it continued from there. Really there was not much for the Rockets to do I guess, outside taking Kemba Walker, but they already had Flynn.
10 - Charlotte Hornets -
Kemba Walker PG 6'0'' 180 21 C B B+ C+ D B
Kemba Walker PG 24 6'0'' 180 C B+ A- B- D- C
Honestly, Kemba is a nice complimentary PG, he does a nice job taking care of the ball for a PG in this era, has an excellent jump shot, and shoots a solid percentage. His assists are pretty low for somebody with A- handling, he doesn’t steal the ball or block shots at all, and he is terrible at rebounding, even for a PG, but he is playing on a team with Bron and Evan Turner both being great passers and rebounders at the wing positions, and with his poor steals and blocks, it is reasonable to believe that his positional defense is serviceable. All in all, Kemba is a nice player, but not one that I would want to build around, at 10 overall I doubt I would be happy with this, but on the other hand at least the Hornets didn’t select a bust who just takes up space on the roster without contributing anything other than a practice punching bag.
11 - New York Knicks -
Greg Smith C 6'11'' 250 20 B D D C+ C A
Greg Smith C 23 6'11'' 250 B D D C+ C+ C
Another bust, Greg Smith was a nice looking player coming out in the draft, and could have gone higher, but teams were scared off by that rebounding. Unluckily for the Knicks that meant he fell right into their lap, and busted. It is never fun when a guy doesn’t develop into a decent role player at least, but Smith has lost playing time since his rookie season. Looking at his numbers, he appears to be a decent scorer, capable of contributing a few buckets off the bench, but the rest of his game is so poor that he just cant handle much playing time.
12 - Dallas Mavericks -
Terrico White SG 6'5'' 211 21 B B C C C- B
Terrico White SG 24 6'5'' 211 B B C- C C C
Terrico was the second player to declare for the draft late, along with John Henson, and while I thought he had been over selected, it turns out in this draft he was a fine selection at 12. Terrico may not look amazing ratings wise, but he has a bit of a Frankie King, or a Tony Dumas vibe to him, as he scores at an excellent rate. He plays minimal defense, well, actually pretty much none, but as a backup SG/SF he would be pretty sick, or even as a starter. Terrico would be a great role player/occasional starter, but he probably isn’t a full time starting player. He was a nice pick by the Mavericks though, but a guy picked at 15 probably should have been the pick, had his scouted potential not been suddenly decreased as draft time neared.
13 - San Antonio Spurs -
Arnett Moultrie PF 6'11'' 220 21 B- D D+ B- C A
Arnett Moultrie SF 24 6'11'' 220 B- D+ D+ B C C
Sorry Play…a guy who was said to be deserving of a lotto pick, but would probably fall out due to questions about his rebounding, Moultrie was picked by me for Play, and well, he busted, which I am sure Play expected. Moultrie is not really a SF or a PF, meaning he pretty much cant do jack shit for any team.
14 - Washington Bullets -
Durrell Summers SG 6'5'' 186 21 B- C+ D+ C+ D B
Durrell Summers SG 6'5'' 186 24 B- C+ D C+ D+ B Cavaliers
Wow, awful 14th overall pick, and he is already in FA, BUST
15 - Boston Celtics -
Alec Burks SG 6'6'' 185 20 C+ B- C- B- D+ D
Alec Burks SG 23 6'6'' 195 B- A- C- A- D+ C
The aforementioned guy who suddenly got devalued right around draft time, the Celtics saw something they liked in their notes and selected Burks at 15. He had a meh TC dropping inside, and got shipped off this past season to Chicago for Luol Deng. Burks isn’t an all star by any means but he still has some training available, so he could be a solid player yet. Tiger, get to work.
16 - Milwaukee Bucks -
Jimmer Fredette PG 6'2'' 195 22 C+ A- B- C D B
Jimmer Fredette PG 25 6'2'' 195 C+ A B C D- C
Jimmer has the C+ A rating that is so nice, but he has been stuck on and off the bench for the most part of his career. He is an excellent role player, and could be deadly in an outside focus as the starting PG, but it just isn’t really available for him in Milwaukee. It will be very tough for Kru to keep him and Leslie, meaning Jimmer could find himself in a new home come next season.
17 - Milwaukee Bucks -
Kyle Singler SF 6'9'' 210 23 C A- C- C+ C+ B
Kyle Singler SF 26 6'9'' 210 C A- D+ B- C+ B
Singler is meh, with some help he could be a solid role player, but it isn’t worth putting points into him for a role player.
18 - Phoenix Suns -
Jeffery Taylor SF 6'7'' 200 22 C+ C+ D+ A- C B
Jeffery Taylor SF 25 6'7'' 200 C+ B C A- C+ C
Nice player to have off the bench. A +5 is nice for a guy picked at 18, and he is pretty good at playing the passing lanes, though had he kept the B- inside he had last year he would look quite a bit better
19 - Orlando Magic -
Wesley Witherspoon SF 6'8'' 185 21 C B+ D B+ C B
Wesley Witherspoon SG 6'8'' 190 24 C A- D+ C+ C C Suns
FA, sucks, -3 on D is eww, though I have to figure part of that is due to the position switch.
20 - New Jersey Nets -
Malcolm Lee SG 6'5'' 190 21 C+ C+ B- B- D B
Malcolm Lee PG 24 6'5'' 190 C+ C+ B- B D+ C
Malcolm was a popular player during the draft, hard to see why now. A pretty useless player.
21 - Los Angeles Lakers -
Luke Babbitt PF 6'9'' 225 22 B- B- D+ C B- B
Luke Babbitt SF 25 6'9'' 225 B- B- D- B B- C
Honestly Babbit could be worth hanging onto, he isn’t far off being a really useful player, he has a nice jumper, and with a bit of work he could be a B- B D B+ B…the drop in handles has made him meh though.
22 - New York Knicks -
Elias Harris SF 6'7'' 220 22 B- C+ D C+ C+ B
Elias Harris SF 25 6'7'' 220 C+ C+ D C+ B- C
Sucks, but at least he still has a team unlike some other players
23 - New York Knicks -
Ryan Richards C 6'10'' 225 20 C+ C- D+ C+ C+ A
Ryan Richards C 23 6'10'' 230 B C- D+ B+ B B
Honestly, if DB put a bit of work into him he could be sick, he can block shots ok, and his ratings look nice. In the least he is a solid backup PF/C, as long as he resigns, getting him back in FA would be interesting
24 - Minnesota Timberwolves -
LaceDarius Dunn SG 6'4" 200 24 C+ B+ C- C+ C- B
LaceDarius Dunn SG 27 6'4'' 200 B- A- C B+ C- B
Trunks asked the draft mods to take the BPA for him on his pick, and we really did. LaceDarius had questions about his upside, but he has answered them quite nicely, becoming in the least a really good role player, but with some work he could be a nice starter.
25 - New York Knicks -
Kalin Lucas PG 6'0'' 190 22 C C B- B- D B
Kalin Lucas PG 6'0'' 190 25 C C C+ C D D Bullets
Worst player in this draft, by far…except that one guy is already out of the league…Kalin will be joining him very soon.
26 - Philadelphia 76ers -
JaMychal Green PF 6'9'' 225 21 C+ D+ D+ B- C+ B
JaMychal Green PF 6'9'' 225 24 C+ D+ D C+ B- B Warriors**
Another bad player in FA now. I have a feeling J-Mychal Reese wont be this bad.
27 - Utah Jazz -
Kris Joseph SF 6'7'' 207 23 B- C C- B C B
Kris Joseph SF 26 6'7'' 207 B- C+ C- B C+ C
Nice first TC, nothing since though, too bad for the Jazz
28 - New York Knicks -
JaJuan Johnson PF 6'10'' 215 22 C+ D- D B C+ B
No longer around? Could not find him
29 - Vancouver Grizzlies -
Robbie Hummell SF 6'8'' 208 22 C+ B C C+ C+ C
Robbie Hummell SF 6'8'' 208 25 C+ A- C- C+ C+ C Grizzlies***
Looks nice, with a solid all around game, but he is in FA…somebody should
