The Vancouver Sun
Summer 1993
The Grizzlies new manager, csdude07, caused quite a stir during his first year in the UOSLR. After the end of last season, Vancouver's management was ready to move on. During a season best forgotten, the Grizzlies let all of their key players go and suffered a horrible record. Some of the general managers in the UOSLR even questioned csdude07's desire to win, which was shocking. "There is no other goal but a championship for me and for my team. The entire staff and all of the players are well aware of this," says csdude07.
Why, if the goal was winning, did the Grizzlies trade away all of the skilled players acquired by the previous general manager? Management says that the team was preparing to rebuild the team and plan for the future. To do this, the Grizzlies made several trades during the season. A brief summary and explanation of each trade is listed below:
GRIZZLIES SEND:
-Kevin McHale
CLIPPERS SEND:
-Darrell Griffith
-Ralph Sampson
-Eddie Lee Wilkins
-2 veteran free agents
-Clippers 96 1st
-Clippers 94, 95 and 96 2nds
As the Grizzlies first move, they traded McHale, an experienced, skilled veteran, for future picks and expiring contracts. "Our first deal set the pace for the rest of the deals we would make during the year. We were trading our older, capable players for expiring contracts and picks," explains the Grizzlies GM.

Spurs Trade:
Spurs 1995 1st Round Pick
PF Mike Smrek
C Greg Kite
SG Craig Hodges
PF Larry Stewart
Grizzlies Trade:
PG Isiah Thomas
PF Antoine Carr
C Eddie Lee Wilkins
Building on what the previous trade emphasized, management sent Isiah Thomas, Antoine Carr, and Eddie Lee Wilkins for another 1st, some youth, and expiring contracts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies send:
Dominique Wilkins
Ricky Pierce
Hornets send:
Vancouver 1993 1st
Blue Edwards
Brian Shaw
Ignoring many threats and warnings from general managers around the league, csdude07 showed some balls in the most controversial trade of the 1993 season. The Grizzlies sent legend Dominique Wilkins and scorer Ricky Pierce to the already powerful Hornets for the chance to draft Shaquille O'Neal. csdude07 tells us "We just had to go for it. The opportunity presented itself and we jumped on it." Getting their first back was a great deal for the Grizzlies because it would allow them to make a colossal pick in the draft.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies Send:
Doc Rivers
Lakers Send:
Scott Brooks
Lakers 1995 1st
This trade was much less dramatic than the previous one. It sent Doc Rivers for an expiring and a first round pick. By now the rebuilding process was well under way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies Send:
Brian Shaw
Warriors Send:
Dell Curry
James Donaldson
owed 1st by 2000
"Brian Shaw wanted out, period," says cdude07. "He wasn't happy with the direction that we were going and requested a trade." The Grizzlies were able to send Shaw for a future first and decent players with expiring contracts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grizzlies Send:
Dell Curry
Spurs Send:
2 vet FA's
Roy Hinson
Spurs 1996 2nd
Curry, much like Shaw, was a player who was not happy with the way things were going in Vancouver. csdude07 sent him for expiring contracts and a future 2nd.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this point the Grizzlies were a team with no talent whatsoever. They did, however, have a lot of tools to build a successful team in the future. I will be discussing this in the next article, "Grizzlies 1993 Offseason Review".
