Background:[/u] He makes it a point to be called "Brandon D. McBride" rather than just his first and last name. The 'D' is inherited from his father's name, who passed away when McBride was just a toddler. McBride was a high school star when he was finally given the starting job his sophomore year. All-State for three years in Missouri, McBride quickly rose to the top of college scouting lists. A highly sought after prospect, he turned down a scholarship offer from Kentucky to attend Cal, his father's alma mater.
McBride ran into a bit of trouble when he was suspended for the last 8 games of his freshman season for striking one of his teammates. He issued an apology, but quickly fell out of the favor of the head coach. After an abysmal sophomore year, and season for Cal, a coaching change was implemented and McBride had a new hope. With a clean slate, he rose to the occasion and claimed the starting job. He had a stellar junior year and led the team in scoring with 23 PPG. Cal made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before losing to Duke.
In seizing his second chance, McBride is looking to take his game to the next level. His draft stock has soared lately, and there are even a few talks of him going #1.
Strengths:[/u] McBride is a pretty complete player. He is a very capable slasher and can hit the jump shot with consistency. He is creative with the ball in his hands, and likes to run the floor. He is a great man defender who will occasionally gamble for steals. He is a decent athlete, and a strong Forward/Guard type that can give weaker opponents trouble on the low blocks.
Weaknesses:[/u] He needs to develop his outside shot a bit more. He isn't a great rebounder.
Scout's Take:[/u] McBride has a few character issues to worry about, but his talent is unbelievable. A gifted player with a passion for the game thought long gone in these days. He works hard and leaves it all on the floor each night. He should be a special player.
