Background:[/u] Octavius Jones was born with a rare super power. Missed shots are magnetically attracted to him. He is a freak of nature when it comes to rebounding. In high school, he registered a 62 Rebound game and was referred to by a local newspaper as "the Bobby Fischer of rebounding, because he knew where the ball was going to be three minutes ago."
At UConn, Jones was an integral part of the squad that won the 2017 NCAA Championship, then made it back to the Championship game in 2018. Both years he averaged over 17 RPG. His junior season was cut short by a back injury that sidelined him for the NCAA tournament. The Huskies lost in the 2nd Round.
Many scouts feel Jones will declare for the draft, but those close to his inner circle suggest that he will be staying for his final season at UConn. He has been discussed as a top 3 pick, perhaps even the #1. Some feel this will play a big factor in his decision, as he has yet to hire an agent.
Strengths:[/u] What he does well, he does REALLY well. Jones is the greatest rebounder to ever be eligible for the UOSLR draft. His athleticism and quickness are plain scary for his size. He is a pesky man defender with great hands. He likes to keep in front of his man at all times and get into his head. He has the strength to play both Forward positions well, but he may match up better defensively with Small Forwards.
Weaknesses:[/u] Jones isn't a scorer by any means. He is inept with the ball offensively, and his only baskets come from put-backs. He is a mediocre free throw shooter and a terrible 3P shooter. Subpar shot-blocker.
Scout's Take:[/u] Jones is one of the rarest players to come out in over a decade. Never before has such a premiere rebounding talent come into the league so young. Jones is a unique player that has teams itching to select him. Could go down as the greatest rebounder UOSLR has ever seen.
