The past few season’s the UOSLR has seen a few point guards enter the league and take team’s by storm. Guys like Terrell Brandon of the Nuggets, Nick Van Exel of the Nets, and Sam Cassell of the Hawks come to mind. Then there are the vets who have become better with age like a fine win. John Stockton of the Pistons, Marc Jackson of the Spurs, and Mark Price of the Warriors are all older points who are still dominate. Then there are the guards who are at their peak in their primes. Gary Payton of the Supersonics, Muggsy Bogues of the 76ers, Rod Strickland of the Grizzlies, and Tim Hardaway of the Timberwolves all fall into the last category.
Question is, who is the league’s best Point Guard?
10. Sam Cassell-Hawks
Cassell has averaged 18 points and 9 assists a game so far in the 1993 season as Hawks are struggling to get by as a young team with a 6-11 record and currently in the 13 seed in the East. Casseell was voted last year’s rookie of the year and has a very bright future ahead of him. Expect him to be a top 5 PG in his prime.
9. Muggsy Bogues-Hornets
Bogues is the smallest player in the league but has the biggest heart. He won’t blow you away scoring wise but he gets over 8 assists a game while turning the ball over only once a game. That’s a very good assist to turnover ration. What is even more impressive is the fact that Bogues also gets over 2 steals a game. This player isn’t dominate like some of the other guards on this list but he never makes a mistake and knows his role on the mighty Hornets.
8. John Stockton-Pistons
Stockton is much like Bogues where he won’t wow you away with scoring but the guy simply knows how to find the open man. Lead’s the league in assists a game with just over 10 a game. Also gets 2 steals a game while chipping in double digit points. John’s starting to go down hill but his over the hill game is still pretty damn good.
7. Rod Strickland-Grizzlies
Strickland has been a key reason why the Grizz have become instant success with their new GM. He’s a long down defender that can guard any guard in the league while also setting up the big man down low in Shaq for easy dunks. When Shaq is double teamed Strickland is good at hitting the outside jumper.
6. Mark Price-Warriors
Price is a lot like Stockton of the Pistons. More so going on over the hill but his over the hill game is still better than most. Price is another guard who has a knack for getting loose balls and turning them into assists on his end. Price 16 ppg and 9 apg. Without Price the Warriors simply wouldn’t function.
5. Mark Jackson-Spurs
Jackson is maybe one of the most under rated guards in the league that many don’t know about because he’s stuck in San Antonio with a losing record. Jackson averages over 16 ppg and 10 apg while on a bad team. Without Jackson the Spurs would be even worse.
4. Gary Payton-Supersonics
Payton is a total stud on both ends of the court. Capable of guarding guards and the off guard position and shutting either down. Payton averages over 17 ppg and 9 apg while carrying his team into the playoffs right now. Payton is in his peak of his prime and still could become an even better player. Scary.
3. Nick Van Exel-Nets
Nick the Quick is a special talent and he’s got a rivalry with Terrell Brandon on who’s the best PG out of the young pups. Scores just under 20 a game while also dishing out nearly 10 assists per game.
2. Tim Hardaway-Timberwolves
Timmy has been a big reason why the Wolves sit atop the western conference at number 1. He’s scoring close to 19 ppg and handing out 9 apg as well. He’s also a top notch defender that gets under player’s skins.
1. Terrell Brandon-Nuggets
Brandon has risen to the top of the league’s guards this season. Sadly it took an injury to star center Vlade Divac for this young gun to show his true colors. Since the injury to Divac Brandon has taken the team on his back where he’s scoring over 23 ppg, 10 apg, and 7 rpg. He’s recorded 3 triple doubles this season and numerously been just a rebound or an assist shy of many more.
