1993 Four Years Later……This is the contract year for the 1993 first round Draft Class, and what better time to look at each player’s development in the four years since that class. It will be known as the Shaquille O’Neal class, but there are a few other players that have become stars. The best draft pick so far has been made in this class, value to talent wise, although a failure to extend a contract cost the 76ers who drafted Preira dearly.Without further ado, here is a recap of the draft.
1. Vancouver Grizzlies -
Shaquille O'Neal C 7'1'' 300 21 B D C B+ B+ A
Shaquille O'Neal C 24 7'1'' 316 A D C A+ A B
1993 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant

1995 - All-Star Game Participant
1995 - All-League First Team
Career Highs Points: 52 Rebounds: 26 Assists: 10 Steals: 5 Blocks: 10
Exactly as expected, Shaq has been a Dominant Center, and the savior of the Grizzlies Franchise. He very well may be the best player in the league. His only real weakness is his lack of a game outside three feet, and his free throws. He has combined with Allan Houston and a few of the Grizzlies other acquisitions that offseason to turn the Grizzlies into the favorites to win the title this year, and going forward. Shaq led the Grizzlies to a UOSLR record 73 wins last season.
Grade: A+

Webber
Houston appeared to really luck out when they jumped from 7 to 2, with Hardaway probably going to return to college if he was not selected @ number 2, the real power was at spot 2, because it was believed they could select Webber, screwing over the team who had pick #3. Although Webber was eventually traded to Washington in Houstons attempt to win the title by acquiring Hakeem Olajuwon, he has still developed into an elite player. He is a new generation of Power Forward, with passing capabilites and good quickness. He does struggle some with turnovers, but he is still an excellent player. He is arguably the second or third best player to come out of this draft, in tight competition with Etienne Preira.

Penny had stated that he would return to college if he was not selected in the top 2 of the draft, but his tune changed when the Utah Jazz, who had reached the semifinals in the draft the previous year, ended up picking him third overall. He has not developed into an elite player, as although his skills probably leave him best suited for PG, he turns the ball over too much to play there. Instead of the three position player he was expected to be, he has developed into a tweener with no position that his skills really are suited to. Its disappointing that he did not develop as expected, but he is still a good player. He probably could have used the extra year in college though.

Had you asked this question last year ET very well may have been the second best player in this draft. He had an excellent season, shooting great % from the field and 3 point line, and excelled with his assist to turnover ratio. He has declined though, making him a very good player, but dropping him below Webber and Etienne Preira. Still at 19.6 points and 11.1 assists with 2 steals a game, he has been excellent. His percentages are down this year, as he has become more of a volume scorer, but still, he is a very good player.

Finley had high expectations when he was drafted. He looked like he could become an elite scorer, but instead he has busted. His defense has improved well, but he appears to have been maxed out offensively, and very well may have hit his peak. It didn’t help that he was drafted by a team with a log jam at the position, but overall that doesn’t change things, he’s still a bust, and also is the third player of the top 5 to be traded.

Career Highs Points: 48 Rebounds: 13 Assists: 8 Steals: 5 Blocks: 2
His outside game is tops in the league. He averages 27 points a game for the Grizzlies, and is an excellent compliment to Shaq. The trade to get him has worked out excellent for the Grizzlies. He shoots amazing %’s across the board. An excellent pick by the Grizzlies, he has developed very well and should be very good for a very long time. He should expect a Max contract or near it in the offseason.

Jones looked like he could become an excellent player, especially defensively, but he has not developed very well. He has an outside game, but he does not score very well. His defense didn’t increase that much either. He is a solid player, but there was definitely better available at the #7 overall pick.

Career Highs Points: 28 Rebounds: 24 Assists: 9 Steals: 5 Blocks: 4
Portland selected a very solid player with the eighth overall pick. Although he isn’t an all-star player, he is very good as a 4th or 5th starter, providing very good rebounding with solid scoring and defense.
Grade: B+
9. Miami Heat -
Bruce Bowen SF 6'7'' 185 22 C B- C- A- D+ B
Bruce Bowen SF 25 6'7'' 197 C B+ C- A C- C
1994 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
Career Highs Points: 14 Rebounds: 11 Assists: 4 Steals: 5 Blocks: 3
Bowen doesn’t look half bad, but his ability to score is terrible. He has not been a very good selection, only being a lockdown defender, with nothing else, not necessarily the best formula for a 9th overall pick. He is probably best served coming off the bench to offer reprieve to a starter, as he is a liability on the offensive end of the floor. He shoots a very nice percentage from the field, but does not take shots often enough.

Not a terrible pick, Ignacio is a very good backup, but is not necessarily what you’re looking for out of the 10th overall pick.
His first year was very solid and his second year even better, with 14 points a game and 7 assists but his %’s have never been good. He is not a scorer, and doesn’t take care of the ball particularly well, and doesn’t necessarily dish out a very high number of assists, but he is a good defender with decent size for a PG.

Although he is playing out of position he was a very good selection by the Heat. He is not an SF, but does have the versatility to play there some. At PF or C I believe his defense would be higher. He doesn’t put up amazing numbers by any means, but he does put up very solid numbers, a 4th or 5th starter, or a good sixth man in a pretty top heavy draft. At 11 he is a solid pick.

He was a boom or bust pick, and he definitely busted. He still has usefulness as a shot blocker though, so he isn’t terrible, but his rebounding leaves a lot to be desired. At least he has the ability to do something useful to go along with his size.

Although he did not develop into anything special, he does have the ability to be a role player on a good team. Considering that a better player was taken 2 spots lower though in Byron Russel, this pick becomes pretty poor. Unlike some players though, at least Cheaney didn’t tank right out of the gates.

Really??? No oone could have predicted this. When ashes said there was a steal not listed in the draft notes, I don't think anyone thought the steal would be quite this good. Preira is averaging 34.6 points 7 assists 4.9 rebounds .9 steals 1.3 blocks a game....for the Chicago Bulls, who signed him in the 1995 offseason. Preira has turned out to be the 2nd or 3rd best player in this draft, depending on who you ask. He has outstanding skill, and will be a star for years to come. Did I mention that he is still developing? He may not have hit his peak yet. He is what Penny Hardaway was expected to be, a 6'7" Guard/Forward who can handle any of the PG/SG/SF positions. He may be a bit light for SF but who cares. He has turned out amazing.
