Its been five seasons since the last Franchise Power Rankings update, so I figured I should update these again having just completed our 5th season. Of course the Bulls are just coming off winning another title, same as the last two times I wrote this article. This was the Grizzlies era of dominance, as they garnered an average of 103.6 points per season…(Bulls last update averaged 108.25, though they received help from me adding in Division Title and conference title points) .There were some large gains by teams, the Lakers, jumping from doormat to average in the history, with the help of LeBron James, as well as the Pacers who captured their first title and took over the east mantle of dominant team. The Bulls remerged this year though, capturing the crown, and helping close the gap on the Grizzlies. This era did see the fall of a giant though, as the Charlotte Hornets garnered an abysmal 103 points…an average of just 20.6 points per season…dropping them from 4th out of the top ten into 11th. I used the same exact formula as last time around.
I gave teams
1 point for a regular season win
2 points for a playoff win
4 points for a Division Title
5 points for a playoff appearance
8 Points for a Conference Title (including the 4 for a Division Title)
10 points for a finals appearance
25 points for a title
That means a first round playoff appearance is worth 5-11 points (5 for the appearance + up to three wins at two points each) 2nd round is 13-19 points, Conference Championship 21-27, a Finals appearance is worth 39-45, and a title is worth 72 points, due to the wins. The most possible points in the regular season would be 90, and the most possible points in the playoffs 72. Without further hesitation, I present the overall Rankings.

- Of the Top 10 Only four are from the East
- However, 4 of the Top 6 are Eastern Conference Teams
- Strongest conference? The East still overall, with an average position of 14.4 versus the Wests 15.64
- Strongest Division? Easily the Central Division in the East…With 4 of the top 6 teams in the power rankings, you better be good, teams in the Central averaged 12.88. Runner up is the Midwest, at 15.14 followed by a tie at 16.14 between the Atlantic and Pacific for last
- The Atlantic has the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th, and 18th place teams, and is the most balanced with its worst being 24th.
- The Central and Midwest have five and four really strong teams respectively, with the rest being terrible due to the other teams dominance and their own atrocity.
- The Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks have been 28th and 29th in all three editions of this rankings
- The Milwaukee Bucks are the only team to improve in both of the power rankings updates
- Chicago has won 5 division titles….and 5 conference titles, never having ended up second best in the conference, they have the highest number while doing this, however, 3 other teams can claim the same 100% ratio: Houston (3-3), Minnesota (3-3), Cleveland (1-1)…each of those teams is in top heavy dominant divisions.
- Most playoff appearances with no title? Seattle, with 15 appearances but no Championship…they also lead in most appearances without a finals berth obviously… The Suns are runner up to them in both categories.
- I am missing one years conference results it would appear, not sure which one, but, as it appears now, 5 teams have not won a division or conference title…Denver, Los Angeles Clippers, Detroit, Utah, Mavericks….each of those teams are ranked nineteenth or worse
- 20th-29th place in the rankings: 6 division titles 1 conference title…1st-10th place in the rankings: 43 Division Titles, 27 Conference Titles…says a lot…. oh and 11th-19th 23 Division Titles 8 Conference Titles
- For Kru: Teams with one GM throughout the history of the league sit 3, 5, 10, 12, 14, 17, 20, 22
