2011 UOSLR Draft Review
#1 New York Knicks - Perry Jones SF 6'11'' 230 20 B C+ C B B- A
The Knicks made one of the biggest jumps in lotto history, jumping from the 7th pick to the 1st overall pick. Jones is the best prospect since LeBron James and he could be the savior the Knicks need. They have kind of been stuck in the middle in terms of trying to win or tanking, but they are lucky the lotto gods were kind to them this year. Jones should turn the Knicks into a contender in no time. Jones has the size, athletic ability, and the skills to become the best player in the league. Some say he will be better than LeBron, which is pretty scary.
#2 Seattle Supersonics - Avery Bradley PG 6'2'’ 180 21 B+ C C B+ D+ A
The Sonics were feverishly trying to deal the pick but they ran out of time and had to go with who they thought was the best player available. He needs to make his CY so he might end up trading Bradley, but if he has a great TC he could stay in Seattle. In the future he could lead the league in steals and should be a pretty good scorer despite his poor outside shooting. His PG skills leave a bit to be desired though, he won’t get you a lot of assists but really isn’t big enough to play SG. So that could be a potential problem.
#3 Toronto Raptors - Trey Thompkins PF 6'9'' 245 21 B C C- C+ C+ A
The Raptors also got a little lucky in the lotto and they went with the best big man available, Trey Thompkins. The Raptors are going to need a good big man to build around and they think Trey will be the guy. He comes out of Georgia with a polished offensive game but he will need some work on the defensive side of the ball. The Raptors should do a good job of developing him so he could be one of the better PFs in the league in due time. Alongside Curry and Hayward, Thompkins could be a part of one of the highest scoring teams in the league in a few years.
#4 New Jersey Nets - Josh Selby SG 6'1'' 180 19 B+ C+ C B- D A
The Nets are the team that got screwed in the lotto because of the Knicks jumping to #1. Jones is the superior prospect in this draft so it sucks for the Nets who were really relying on getting him in this draft to help make their CY which is coming up soon. Selby is listed at SG but his height suggests that he play PG but he has had problems with turnovers in his career. The Nets don’t seem to high on him so they will most likely trade him soon. He does have some awesome scoring ratings for a 19 year old though. He will be able to score the ball and he will be a pretty good defender as well.
#5 Cleveland Cavaliers - Jordan Hamilton SF 6'7'' 210 21 B B- C- C C- A
This pick was originally the Kings but after they were also screwed in the lotto they decided to try and win again. They traded the pick to the Cavs for Chris Bosh. The Cavs decided to take a chance on SF Jordan Hamilton. Hamilton has good scoring ratings but that is about as far as it goes. He is a bit of a reach at this point but the Cavs love what he can bring to their team. The idea of having another 25 PPG scorer alongside Gay had to be exciting for them. He will need to improve his defense if he wants to be a full time starter though. He reminds me a bit of a poor man’s Vince Carter.
#6 Milwaukee Bucks - Travis Leslie SG 6'4'' 202 21 B C- D+ B+ C+ A
The Bucks think they get a steal here at 6 by taking Travis Leslie out of Georgia. He is probably the best pure athlete in the draft but having said that he is probably one of the worse skill guys in the draft as well. It will be hard for the Bucks to get that C- up but getting it to atleast C+ would be acceptable for him considering all the other things he can do. His jumping ability allows him to be a good rebounder at only 6’4’’ and his quickness and strength allow him to be able to guard most any guard or small forward out there. If that outside game doesn’t develop though and he is all jumping, strength and quickness then that could be a bit of a problem.
#7 Atlanta Hawks - Brandon Knight PG 6'3'' 185 20 C+ C+ B- B- C- A
The Hawks have been unlucky when drafting PGs in years past so I wasn’t sure if they would go down the same road again. But they need to find themselves a PG if they want to be successful. And I think Knight could be the guy. He isn’t very athletic but he knows how to play the game and make his teammates better. He has good size for a PG and does a little bit of everything for you. His scoring will have to be developed but honestly I would be happy with B- B or so with him. He has a chance to be a great player in this league and for the Hawk’s sake, he better.
#8 Milwaukee Bucks - John Henson PF 6'10'' 200 20 B- C- C- B- C+ A
With the Bucks second lotto pick they decided to go with a late entry into the draft, John Henson. Henson only spent a few years at UNC and didn’t show a whole lot but GMs love his upside. He is 6’10’’ but he only weighs 200 lbs so he will definitely have to put on some weight if he expects to be around for awhile in the league. Henson’s overall game is pretty raw but he has a lot of room to grow. He definitely has the makings of a pretty good big man. Not sure where he falls in the developmental line for the young Bucks team but if he gets enough attention he could be a good player.
#9 Houston Rockets - Soloman Alabi C 7'1'' 251 23 C+ D+ D- B C+ B
Size alone will make this guy pretty effective in his first year. The Rockets needed to take someone who could help them win now and they feel Alabi can do that. He won’t score much but he won’t have to on a team with Kevin Durant. What he can do is play great defense and the Rockets need some good big men if they want to make their CY. This class was pretty guard heavy but the Rockets needed a big and Alabi was the best available at the pick.
#10 Charlotte Hornets - Kemba Walker PG 6'0'' 180 21 C B B+ C+ D B
The Hornets were a PG away from being a good team this year so they obviously needed to address that this off-season. And luckily Kemba Walker falls right into their lap. Kemba could be the most ready player coming out of the draft, definitely the best PG. And at only 21 he should have some solid potential. Kemba should fit in nicely with the Hornets and make them a better team instantly, his leadership skills are unmatched. If Kemba has some good potential then he could be a beast for the Hornets.
#11 New York Knicks - Greg Smith C 6'11'' 250 20 B D D C+ C A
With their second lotto pick the Knicks decided to go after a big man and since Alabi was off the board they go with prospect Greg Smith. Smith played well in college but it wasn’t against the best competition. He is very big and strong and can bang inside with the best of them. That is about as far as his game goes right now though. He needs a lot of work because his game is very raw but he has a lot of room to grow. He will be a project for the Knicks but they could afford to take a chance here since they drafted Jones earlier.
#12 Dallas Mavericks - Terrico White SG 6'5'' 211 21 B B C C C- B
The Mavs acquired this pick via the Kings and with it they took the other late entry into this draft, Terrico White. White is very similar to Hamilton who was selected earlier but scouts don’t think he has as much upside. White’s game is a little better than Hamilton’s right now though. The Mavs needed a SG and a guy who can put the ball in the basket so White was the right pick for them here. He will need to work hard on improving his defense and set his mind to becoming more of an all around player. If he can do that then he should be a very good player for the Mavs.
#13 San Antonio Spurs - Arnett Moultrie PF 6'11'' 220 21 B- D D+ B- C A
The Spurs didn’t have much say so in this pick since broph selected for them but he is very similar to Smith in terms of how raw his game is and how much potential he has. Also like Smith, Moultrie didn’t play against the best competition in college so that hurts his stock a bit. He has the size but he will need to improve his rebounding if he wants to be a starting big man in this league. He is definitely a project but the Spurs can afford to take a chance and who knows he may become great.
#14 Washington Bullets - Durrell Summers SG 6'5'' 186 21 B- C+ D+ C+ D B
Summers was projected as a late first round pick before the combine but due to his impressive workouts his stock rose considerably. He impressed the Bullet enough to where they took a chance on him with the 14th pick. Summers is definitely a stretch here at 14 but the Bullets liked what they saw. His offensive game is solid and he is an average defender, not much else about him jumps out at you.
#15 Boston Celtics - Alec Burks SG 6'6'' 185 20 C+ B- C- B- D+ B
The Celtics need a good SG and Burks was probably a rating or two away from being a lotto pick so they get a pretty good player here at 15. He is your prototype SG and has good potential; the Celtics could use a nice TC from to make up for Rose not really panning out yet.
#16 Milwaukee Bucks - Jimmer Fredette PG 6'2'' 195 22 C+ A- B- C D B
Before the combine many people didn’t have Fredette going very high but he impressed a lot of teams and showed he can play with the other guards at the combine. He is one of the better shooters in the draft and has above averaging handling but his defensive game is pretty bad right now.
#17 Milwaukee Bucks - Kyle Singler SF 6'9'' 210 23 C A- C- C+ C+ B
Not sure I like this pick by the Bucks. Singler is a reach at 17 in my opinion. He can shoot the ball and is a decent rebounder and defender but I don’t think he has much potential and unless he has a few nice TCs I don’t see him being much.
#18 Phoenix Suns - Jeffery Taylor SF 6'7'' 200 22 C+ C+ D+ A- C B
This is a pretty decent pick for the Suns. Taylor is the best defender in the draft and with C+ C+ scoring ratings, one good TC could have him looking very good since he doesn’t really need to improve his defense. It might be time for the Suns to rebuild though they might have been better off taking a younger guy here who has more potential.
#19 Orlando Magic - Wesley Witherspoon SF 6'8'' 185 21 C B+ D B+ C B
Witherspoon is guy who can come in right away and start for a few teams in the league. He is a good defender and a pretty good shooter as well. The C inside scared off most teams but if that goes up in TC he will be looking very good for the Magic.
#20 New Jersey Nets - Malcolm Lee SG 6'5'' 190 21 C+ C+ B- B- D B
I like this pick a lot for the Nets. Lee looks almost identical to Brandon Knight who was taken at 7 by the Hawks. Probably not as much potential but Lee has more size and might be better in his rookie season. He can play both SG and PG, with his ratings he will most likely be playing PG.
#21 Los Angeles Lakers - Luke Babbitt PF 6'9'' 225 22 B- B- D+ C B- B
Babbitt might be the steal of the draft. He had some of the better ratings in the draft but C defense for a big man isn’t attractive. That should go up at SF though. He will be able to take advantage of his size at SF as well. I like this pick a lot and I think Babbitt could be a great player for the Lakers.
#22 New York Knicks - Elias Harris SF 6'7'' 220 22 B- C+ D C+ C+ B
Can’t really go wrong with who you pick here, Harris is a decent pick but not really needed unless Jones is going to play PF. He has those ratings where after a nice TC he could look pretty good. Not sure he has much potential though. Could be a good bench player in the future.
#23 New York Knicks - Ryan Richards C 6'10'' 225 20 C+ C- D+ C+ C+ A
The Knicks decide to go with another big man here at 23. Richards is young and raw but probably has the most potential of everyone left. If one of those C+s was a B- he would have went a bit higher. Hit or miss for the Knicks though.
#24 Minnesota Timberwolves - LaceDarius Dunn SG 6'4" 200 24 C+ B+ C- C+ C- B
Dunn is a dynamic scorer and could be nice off the bench for the Timberwolves right away. He is one of the oldest draftees though so he doesn’t have much potential but you never know he could become a good scorer with a little attention.
#25 New York Knicks - Kalin Lucas PG 6'0'' 190 22 C C B- B- D B
After stocking up on big men, the Knicks decide to draft a PG here. Lucas was a very good college player but his game doesn’t translate very well to the pros. He is only 6’ and can’t really score much but he could develop into a nice backup one day for the Knicks.
#26 Philadelphia 76ers - JaMychal Green PF 6'9'' 225 21 C+ D+ D+ B- C+ B
Steal of the draft in my opinion. Green is a monster. The 76ers make a brilliant decision here by taking him here. He comes from a great college and is willing to learn and grow. With the proper coaching, Green could be a very good player.
#27 Utah Jazz - Kris Joseph SF 6'7'' 207 23 B- C C- B C B
This guys slips a bit because of his age but he is a pretty good player. He is a good defender and rebounder and can score the ball a bit. He should help off the bench for the Jazz right away.
#28 New York Knicks - JaJuan Johnson PF 6'10'' 215 22 C+ D- D B C+ B
With their 20th pick in the first round the Knicks decide to go with another big man. Johnson is a pretty nice choice. He is a good defender and is a pretty good athlete. I guess the Knicks are just going to hope one of the bigs they drafted will turn out good.
#29 Vancouver Grizzlies - Robbie Hummell SF 6'8'' 208 22 C+ B C C+ C+ C
With the last pick of the first round the champs pick up SF Robbie Hummell from Purdue. Hummell could help right away with a nice TC but he probably won’t get much time unless the Grizzlies decide to rebuild. He can score the ball though and has a pretty well rounded game but not much potential.
