Inside The GM's Mind: Hawks Evaluate FA Targets
As a struggling franchise (recently the 2nd worst franchise in UOSLR history), there are only two important times of the season. The draft lottery and free agency. Twice a year a struggling team gets a glimmer of hope that they will one day ascend to relevancy. Or in the Hawks' case, from futility to mediocrity.
After taking a look at the free agent list, I decided to write down some notes on the free agents I plan on bidding on. Below I will share them with the rest of the league.
DeShawn Stevenson SF 6'6'' 217 29 B A A A C B
Why Would I Want Him: We suck. He does not.
Possible Reservations: None
Chances I Get Him: None
Contract I'd Offer: Max
Greg Oden C 7'1'' 280 23 B- C- C- A- B+ B
Why Would I Want Him: Oden's a young big man capable of averaging a double double. For the style of offense I run, he'd be a great addition. He's the best young big man on the market.
Possible Reservations: His ceiling just looks to be very good and someone is going to give him a big contract that I don't think he's worth.
Chances I Get Him: Very Low
Contract I'd Offer: Not Max
Chris Paul PG 6'0'' 174 26 B- B- B+ A- C- B
Why Would I Want Him: Paul is the most talented PG on the market. He's good enough to win a championship with, or at least contended.
Possible Reservations: Brandon Knight will be better.
Chances I Get Him: Flo-Rida Low (I might not even bid on him)
Contract I'd Offer: 8-10 mil per
Yakhouba Diawara SF 6'7'' 230 28 B+ B- C A- C C
Why Would I Want Him: Perfect guy to come off the bench for my team. Can play inside and shoots a really high FG%. Also plays solid defense.
Possible Reservations: I wish he was a better rebounder.
Chances I Get Him: 49%
Contract I'd Offer: A little more than the MLE
Yi Jianlian PF 7'1'' 241 23 C+ C+ C B+ B+ B
Why Would I Want Him: Defense and rebounding off the bench. Or a starter as we currently suck.
Possible Reservations: None
Chances I Get Him: Medium
Contract I'd Offer: Near MLE
Chase Budinger SF 6'7'' 218 23 C+ B C B C A
Why Would I Want Him: Byron Mullens can't be the only white guy on my team. Plus if I pretended he was 19, he'd be a nice draft prospect.
Possible Reservations: He sucks.
Chances I Get Him: High (He sucks, we sucks)
Contract I'd Offer: 3 Mil-ish
Javaris Crittenton PG 6'6'' 202 23 C+ B+ B B+ D B
Why Would I Want Him: I'm a sucker for outside shooting and defense. Plus he's 6'6". Good amount of steals.
Possible Reservations: Turns the ball over a lot. Name eeriely close to Jarvis.
Chances I Get Him: Medium
Contract I'd Offer: MLEish
Sean Williams PF 6'10'' 251 24 A- C D B B- B
Why Would I Want Him: He's like the UOSLR version of the real life Amar'e. Lots of blocks, probably terrible positional defense. High FG% which always works great with a fast offense.
Possible Reservations: I'm not going to like the contract I'd offer him.
Chances I Get Him: Medium
Contract I'd Offer: Max
Cheikh Samb C 7'1'' 220 26 C D+ D A C+ D
Why Would I Want Him: He plays good defense, should block shots.
Possible Reservations: The only thing he does is play defense, he sucks.
Chances I Get Him: High
Contract I'd Offer: More than anyone else will
Kris Humphries PF 7'1'' 240 26 C+ C+ C- B+ A- B
Why Would I Want Him: I wanted him last year, he took less money. I LOVE REBOUNDING. I'd start him, I just need someone to rebound the damn ball if I have a bunch of shooters.
Possible Reservations: He took considerably less money last year.
Chances I Get Him: Flo-Rida Low
Contract I'd Offer: Less than last year...jackass
Joakim Noah PF 6'11'' 241 26 B C- D B+ B- B
Why Would I Want Him: He fills a need, blocks shots, shoots a high percentage from the field. Could probably slide over to the C position.
Possible Reservations: There are better centers available, I'd rather overpay Greg Oden.
Chances I Get Him: Medium-High
Contract I'd Offer: 6-8 Mil per
Craig Smith PF 6'7'' 259 27 B- C- C- B+ B+ C
Why Would I Want Him: Solid big man who will probably come cheap.
Possible Reservations: He's not going to get offered enough for me to have any.
Chances I Get Him: Medium-High
Contract I'd Offer: Around the LLE
Randy Foye PG 6'4'' 212 27 C+ B- B A- C B
Why Would I Want Him: Solid defense as a PG. Nothing special.
Possible Reservations: Brandon Knight hates Villanova.
Chances I Get Him: Might not even offer
Contract I'd Offer: Below MLE
Chuck Hayes PF 6'6'' 245 28 C C D+ A B+ D
Why Would I Want Him: You won't find many positional defenders better than him.
Possible Reservations: He's worthless on offense. Not really proven either. Doesn't fill the need for shot blocking.
Chances I Get Him: Super High
Contract I'd Offer: Big Face HUNNEDS! (Around 5 Mil possibly)
Tyson Chandler C 7'1'' 236 28 B C C+ A B+ C
Why Would I Want Him: If I like Chuck Hayes, I really like him. He's what Oden could be, but now. Defense, rebounding, and can pass the ball.
Possible Reservations: He's 28, will I even be good before he declines. Low FG%.
Chances I Get Him: Low
Contract I'd Offer: 10-11 Mil per
Anderson Varejao C 6'10'' 234 28 B D+ D- A

Why Would I Want Him: Defense.
Possible Reservations: Is statistically unimpressive.
Chances I Get Him: Medium-Low

Why Would I Want Him: Surprisingly, he's really good. A 20/10 big man even. Interior presence to balance out the shooters I plan to attain.
Possible Reservations: I just don't trust Eddy Curry. Not really the type of center I envisioned, but he's really good.
