UOSLR DIVISIONAL AWARDS
Ok the season is nearly half over and well I thought Id do a Mid Season Award Article using the End of Season outline. I`ve done one for each division just to see how things look. Take a wee gander hehehe
ATLANTIC DIVISION
Most Valuable Player: C Hakeem Olajuwon Bullets
Defensive Player: C Hakeem Olajuwon Bullets
Hakeem took the MVP and Defensive Player honours due to his breath taking form this season. Hes not only the MVP for this division but will prob win his 3rd straight league honour. Hes been dominant on both sides of the court averaging 32 points, 13 rebs 4 assts and 4 blks and leading the Bullets to a division leading record.
Another possible choice for this award could have been David Robinson, Hornacek, Barkley and Miller but their teams arent doing as good and Hakeem has just overshadowed the these guys in nearly every category. .
Rookie:Popeye Jones PF
Rookie leader for the Atlantic Division for me goes to Pop-Eye Jones. He comes in averaging 33mins 9 pts, 10 brds and 1 asst on the season and looks like a good pick up at 20 in the draft. Hes a big body and along side David Robinson, has been playing solid ball for a 1st year pro. He beat out challenges from Anthony Peeler, Robert Horry and Lee Mayberry. If he can build on this 1st half of the season, Pop Eye will have people talking about his pro career and not the weird shape of his head.
Sixth Man: A.C. Green SF 6th man for me goes to A.C Green. The 29 year old has been a very good pick up for the Knicks and is a spark off the bench when they need one. He logs in 17 mins a game playing at either C, PF or SF. Hes averaging 5 pts and 5 rebs a game and has shown glimpses of what he can produce when given major minutes. Season best for Green was the 2nd game of the season, 32 mins, 22 pts, 10 rebs.
All Atlantic First Team
C Hakeem Olajuwon Bullets
PF Charles Barkley Braves
SF Terry Cummings Knicks
SG Scottie Pippen Magic
PG Jeff Hornacek Celtics
My picks for 1st team Atlantic looks very formidable!! Hakeem, Barkley and Cummings form the front court which is averaging a combined 70 pts and 30 rebs. Scottie Pippen is a versatile player that started off at SF but has moved to SG and hasnt looked out of place. Hes averaging 26 pts, 7 rebs, 5assts and 1.8 steals a game and will compliment PG Jeff Hornacek who is scoring, dishing and even playing a lil defence.
All Atlantic Defensive Team
C Hakeem Olajuwon Bullets
PF Larry Nance Celtics
SF Lionel Simmons Braves*
SG Vernon Maxwell Bullets
PG Michael Williams Magic
As for the defensive team, Olajuwon comes in at Center with his 4 blocks, 1.5 steals, 13 rebs and countless changed shots. Larry Nance is at PF with 11 rebs, 2 blks and 1 stl a game. Lionel Simmons is in at SF for the Braves with his close to 8 rebs, 2 stls. I couldnt find any other SF the div that stood out, so Simmons slots in here. The back court is a solid defensive back court the includes Vernon Maxwell who in the very 1st game came away with 7 steals against the Heat. Whilst Michael Williams leads the Magics defensive end of the court with 2.2 stls and 4 rebs a game. Solid starting 5 and should be a very good team with Olajuwon achoring the defence.
All Atlantic Rookie Team
C Melvin Robinson Magic (Default)
PF Pop Eye Jones 76ers
SF Robert Horry Heat
SG Anthony Peeler Bullets
PG Lee Mayberry Heat
This is a very good starting 5 for the Atlantic division. Lee Mayberry has a had a good start to his pro career coming off the bench behind Eric Murdoch with 4 pts, 1 reb and nearly 3 assts a game at only .8 of a TO. Anthony Peeler who is playing SF for the Bullets I feel will prob be a better SG. At SF he has been averaging 8 pts, 4 rebs, 2
assts, 1 stl in only 28 mins. Robert Horry is in at SF with 9 pts, 5 rebs and 2.6 assts with a season high 22 pts 14 rebs and 7 assts. Rookie of the mid season Pop Eye Jones will be a solid PF with Melvin Robinson playing C, myabe with some time he could show us what hes worth...
Central Division
Most Valuable Player: SG Michael Jordan Raptors
For the Central Division Michael Jordan took the honor here with a great 1st half performance. He has led his team to the top of the Eastern Conference standings with 33 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assts, 2 stls on 51% shooting. He beat out the powerful Karl Malone and Glen Rice for the award who both are having great seasons with over 30 ppg
for their respective teams.
Defensive Player: C Rik Smits Bulls
Defensive player was Rik Smits. he has been a surprise with his play on the defensive side of the ball. He is averaging 10 rebs, 1.3 stls and 2.2 blocks a game for the Bulls who are giving up 97 pts a game. In a game vs the Raptors he led the Bulls to victory with 28 pts, 12 rebs, 5 blks and 3 stls, showing his fast hands and timing on the defensive end as well as displaying a shooting touch.
Rookie:P.J. Brown PF Bucks
Rookie award has to go to PJ Brown. Hes been very solid lately averaging 14 pts, 10 rebs, 3 assts, 1 stl and nearly 2 blocks a game for the Bucks. Very good numbers for a 1st year player. The Central Division has a number of quality rookies such as Muresan, Spree, Mourning and Mashburn who all ply their trade in this division and
could make it a tough division to be in for the next few years.
Sixth Man : Frank Brickowski Bulls
6th man is Frank Brickowski, hes come off the bench and played awesome for the Bulls and has filled in tremendously when they have needed him to come in and bring some life back into their game. Hes been averaging 14 pts, 8,3 rebs 1 asst and 1 stl a game. When he has been called into start he has done very well is their life saver when someone gets injured or just isnt playing well for the team.
All Central First Team
C Rik Smits Bulls
PF Karl Malone Hornets
SF Glen Rice Pistons
SG Michael Jordan Raptors
PG Joe Dumars
All central team is prob a very scary looking sight for any opposing team. It has the size in the front court with Smits, Malone and Rice and the speed and wits in the back court with Joe Dumars and Jordan. Three of the starting five average 30 pts a game so scoring wont be a problem and the back court combines for 5 stls a game .
Very tough looking starting 5 to match up agianst.
All Central Defensive Team
C Rik Smits Bulls
PF Luke Longley Pistons
SF Nick Anderson Cavs
SG Michael Jordan Raptors
PG Muggsy Bogues Bulls
Three changes in the defensive team, with Longley who is averaging 10 brds, 2 blks and 1 stl a game and Nick Anderson who is averaging 7 rebs and nearly 2 stls a game at the SF position. Longley beat out the challange from Malone whilst Anderson fought off strong challenges from Rice and LJ. Finally Muggsy Bogues comes in at
PG with 2.8 steals a game and .3 of a block, you would think much of it but at 5`3" thats something worth noting
All Central Rookie Team
C Gheorghe Muresan Pistons
PF PJ Brown Bucks
SF Jamal Mashburn Hawks
SG Latrell Spreewell Hawks
PG Chris Smith Hawks
The Rookies team looks very nice and has a bright future. Muresan has surprised many with his play this season and beat out Alonzo Mourning at the Centre spot with 11 pts, 8 rebs, 2 assts, 1.7 blks on 47% shooting. PJ Brown takes the PF position and the remaining three poisitions are taken by Atlanta Hawks players. Jamal
Mashburn at 13 pts, 5 rebs, 2 assts, Latrell Spreewell 8 pts, 2 rebs, 1 stl and Chris Smith 3 pts, 1 reb and 1.9 assts round out the rookie team. David Wesley was unlucky to miss out but hasnt seen enough playing time to warrant selection
Midwest Division
Most Valuable Player: C Patrick Ewing Spurs
Defensive Player : C Patrick Ewing Spurs
Another C takes the MVP and Defensive Player awards for the Mid West Division. That is Partick Ewing who is playing well for the Spurs and has led them to 2nd in the division and 5th seed for the playoffs if they started today. He has produced solid numbers with 24 pts, 11 rebs, 2 assts, 1 stl and 2 blks a game showing he can do it
on both ends of the court. Best game so far in the season was against the Mavs with 32 pts , 11 rebs, 3 assts, 6 blks and 2 steals. Great plkayer to build your team around!!
Rookie : Terrell Brandon Nuggets
Rookie of the year was a toss up between NVE and Terrell Brandon. We went with Terrell Brandon who has been a great floor general with 14pts, 4 rebs, 7 assts a game and has led his team to a 20-15 division lead. He has won 3 player of the game awards and has had season highs with 25 pts, 12 rebs , 11 assts and 5 steals. Give him a year or so and he could end up being a premier PG that people will be after.
Sixth Man : James Worthy Rockets
6th man goes to Big Game James Worthy who has come off the bench for the Rockets and provided them with instant offence averaging 13 pts in 24 mins at 51% from the field. Best game was against the Celtics where he logged 21 mins and ended up with 25 pts with 11-16 shooting and 0 turnovers. Great to have someone like that who can pick up the offence when the team needs it!!
Midwest First Team
C Patrick Ewing Spurs
PF Dale Davis Rockets
SF Clyde Drexler Nuggets
SG Reggie Lewis Spurs
PG Mark Jackson Spurs
All Mid West 1st team is made up with 3 Spurs and 1 Rockets and Denver player. Patrick Ewing, Mark Jackson and Reggie Lewis represent the Spurs with great numbers, we know why Patrick is there but Reggie has been phenomenal for the Spurs averaging 40 mins, 24 pts, 6 rebs and 4 assts and his PG Mark Jackson
averaging 10 pts, 4 rebs, 10 assts and nearly 2 stls a game. Drexler is in at SF from Denver, he has spent most of this season with the Blazers but comes to Denver with the hope of leading this franchise to the promised land. He brings averages of 21 pts, 6 rebs and 4 assts to the team and forms a very athletic combination with Reggie
Lewis. Rounding out the top 5 is Dale Davis, this 2nd year power forward is the only choice here with his 12 pts, 10 reb and 2.5 blks a game. Other players unlucky to miss out are Arvydas Sabonis and Hu Weidong.
Midwest Defensive Team
C Patrick Ewing Spurs
PF Mark West Spurs
SF Clyde Drexler Nuggets
SG Reggie Lewis Spurs
PG Rod Strickland Mavs
Patrick Ewing, Drexler and Lewis are the constants for this team and are joined by Mark West and his 3.2 blocks a game and Strickland with his 2.3 steals a game and 4 rebounds. Dale Davis had a good shot at making this team but Mark West has just been swatting shots its not funny, hes forced his way into the starting lineup and
had a great game vs the Magic with 22 brds and 5 blks.
Midwest Rookie Team
C Sean Rooks TWolves
PF Tom Gugliotta TWolves
SF Bobby Phills Jazz
SG Doug Christie Mavs
PG Terrell Brandon Nuggets
The All Rookie team looks like a good one. Sean Rooks starts at C coming off the bench for the Wolves averaging 8 pts and 6 rebs for the Wolves and is partnered with Tom Gugliotta who beat our Clarence Weatherspoon and has been solid for the young Twolves averaging 9 pts, 8 rebs and 2 assts. Bobby Phils comes in next for the Jazz with his 7 pts, 4 rebs in 21 mins. Christie and Brandon form the back court, with NVE missing out, if I had a choice I would have both Brandon and Van Exel in the back court but both of em being PGs made me choose and I had to choose the Rookie of the 1st half of the season
Pacific Division
Most Valuable Player: C Brad Daugherty Warriors
This is a tough division, alot of the players are similar in talent and there is no real standout. But the MVP for the Pacific would have to go to Brad Daugherty from the Warriors with his 27 pts, 10 rebs, 4 assts and 1 stl a game. He has been playing really well and has beaten off challenges from Terry Porter, John Stockton, Derrick
Coleman and Michael Adams. The Warriors have had a slow start to the season but have rallied and are only 1.5 games behind the Clippers who can feel the Warriors and Sonics breathing down their neck.
Defensive Player : C Pervis Ellison Lakers
Defensive player would have to go to Pervis Ellison of the Lakers. Hes averaging 12 rebs, 1 stl and 3.2 blks a game for a team that is tryna get into the playoffs for the 1st time. They are currently 8th and could very well make some noise should the make the post season.
Rookie : SG Harold Miner Lakers
Rookie award goes to Harold Miner who could win Rookie of the year from the Lakers. He has played in all 34 of their games and is averaging 14pts, 4 rebs and 2 assts a game. Hes had season highs of 23 pts, 9 rebs, 6 assts and 5 steals this year and could very well develop into a very nice player in the next few years.
Sixth Man: SF Christian Laettner Suns
6th man goes to Rookie Christian Laettner who is coming off the bench for the Suns and averaging 10 pts, 7 rebs, 2 assts and a steal. If he could manage starters minutes he would be a lock for Rookie of the year. Hes been a great help backing up DC, Causwell and Augmon and looks like a very good player.
Pacific First Team
C Brad Daugherty Warriors
PF Roy Tarpley Sonics
SF Magic Johnson Warriors
SG Drazen Petrovic Sonics
PG Terry Porter Clippers
This is a very nice looking starting 5 for the Pacific Division. Daugherty starts at C with Tarpley from the Sonics playing along side him at PF who has been an asset for the Sonics this season averaging 22 pts, 10 brds, 1 asst, 1 stl and a block for the 23-13 Sonics. Magic Johnson is in at SF due to the fact that hes playing out of position and is still putting up great numbers with 15 pts, 5 rebs , 8 assts and 1.4 stls on 50% shooting is 1st team material in anyones book. Drazen comes in at SG for the Sonics. He was a big pick up for the Sonics and is showing us why with his 23 pts, 4 rebs and 5 assts a game, Drazen makes the 1st team. PG was hard to choose because of the players that were there, John Stockton, Terry Porter, Michael Adams and Gary Payton are all great PGs and deserve to be there. I however, chose the PG that made the biggest difference to his team, and that was Terry Porter, he has led his team to the div lead with 17 pts, 5 rebs, 9 assts and 2.2 steals a game. Very good numbers and he has given the rest of the team a reason to play well.
Pacific Defensive Team
C Pervis Ellison Lakers
PF Derrick Coleman Suns
SF Stacey Augmon Suns
SG Hersey Hawkins Suns
PG Gary Payton Supersonics
Purvis Ellison is the logical choice here at C with his 12 rebs, 1 stl and 3.2 blks a game. Hes had a career high 22 rebs and 9 blocks so you know its going to be hard getting past his wing span. Derrick Coleman leads a trio of Suns players here on the defensive team along with Augmon and Hawkins. They are here because their team
gives up only 88 pts a game which shows how hard it is to score on them. Coleman is averaging 11 brds, 1 stl and 1 blk whilst Hawkins and Augmon both average 2 stls a game and 4.0 and 5.8 brds respectively. Gary Payton the glove is the best man for this position with 4.6 rebs a game and a league leading 3.2 steals a game.
Pacific Division Rookie Team
C Marcus Webb Lakers
PF Christian Laettner Suns
SF Walt Williams Suns
SG Matt Steigenga Kings
PG Harold Miner Lakers
The Rookies are led by Marcus Webb who is coming of f the Lakers bench and scoring 9 pts a game, 4 rebs 1 asst in 16 mins. He shows hes got some scoring touch down low and could be useful. Christian Laettner is in at PF and with this starting 5 would prob be their go to guy. Next up is Walt Williams,he hasnt played a game but has shown some ability in pre-season to give him a shot at SF, as well as noone else standing out. Matt Steigenga comes in at SG and Harold Miner at PG because there are no rookie PGs in this division. Maybe Miner could show some skills here, maybe not lol but hes a keeper for the lakers and will probably make one of the Rookie teams
at the end of the year.
There ya have it, thats just who I would think make each divisons teams and award winners. Just my opinion but discussions on who your choices would be great, who do you think would be the better Divisional team, Defensive team or Rookie team? I dunno but it would be interesting to see which team would come out on top in
a 7 game series. Hope yall enjoyed it!!!
Ok the season is nearly half over and well I thought Id do a Mid Season Award Article using the End of Season outline. I`ve done one for each division just to see how things look. Take a wee gander hehehe
