I dunno, it would make sense though that the physical ratings: quickness, jumping and strength would have an effect. Obviously having high post/drive/perimeter defense would help too.

Yeah I think its based on defensive ratings.

i think the defensive ratings might play a bigger role than the athletic ratings

Play says its perimeter D

Play says its perimeter D since big men are the culprits of high fouls usually, would it be a high or low perimeter D rating that leads to fouls?

honestly, I don't know but I ran a test sim just now with this:
PF Player A - 5 Strength, 5 Quickness, 100 Post D, 100 Perimeter D, 100 Drive D PF Player B - 100 Strength, 100 Quickness, 5 Post D, 5 Perimeter D, 5 Drive D
Results:
PF Player A - 2.8 fouls a game in 35 mpg with same Pace/Press/Trap PF Player B - 2.7 fouls a game in 37 mpg with same Pace/Press/Trap
Pretty negligible...however, if you use the ratings generator using NBA stats to generate the ratings, if you adjust the fouls up or down, the only two ratings to fluctuate are Post D and Perimeter D, so I guess those are the ratings.

what about the settings of the depth chart? trapping...pressing...

More often you trap/press, more likely you are to get into foul trouble.
