As we get to the end of the season, people start to look towards the offseason. We take a look at some of the top free agents, sorted by position. I may have missed some players so don't bite my head off if I did.
536 Joel Pryzbilla C 34 7'1'' 266 C C- C- A- B- D
Przy does one thing very well, and that is block shots. In a reserve role this year he had averaged 5 ppg and 6.6 rpg. However the biggest stat is the 2 bpg in 22 mpg. There is no doubt that he could average 3 bpg if he started. With the market for blockers you would expect him to get more than the 5 million he is making right now, but the market just isn’t there. He is likely looking for a new team since the Nets will be close to the HC unless some people will retire. He is likely to get mle or around that.
297 Ryan Richards C 23 6'10'' 230 B C- D+ B+ B B
Richards really shot out of nowhere for the Knicks, which is good. Richards doesn’t do any one this really great, but is solid all-around. He can score some, block some, and rebound some with averages of 24 mpg, 7 ppg, 7 rpg, and 1 bpg. I can see a team overpaying for him with the hope that he still has some potential left in him. 7 million wouldn’t be shocking per year, but I think his actual worth is lower.
19 Saer Sene C 28 7'0'' 237 C+ D D A- B+ C
This year Sene is playing for slightly more than the MLE (like $8,354 more), so I think his salary next year will stay right around there. Sene isn’t great at what he does. He is playing slightly less than 30 mpg and averaging 9 rpg. I would say starting he could get 10 rpg. He isn’t much of a blocker. I think teams see his ratings and thing he might be a blocker. Anyway he is a solid backup defensive big.
546 Kris Humphries C 29 7'1'' 240 B- B- D+ B+ A C
Humphries is an interesting player. He has really came on as of late and has really shown he can play. He has turned into a great rebounder averaging 12 per game. His defensive capabilities are solid with him averaging 1 spg and 1.7 bpg. Don’t think he is a good scorer because of his ratings. Yes he does average 11 ppg but he shoots .368 fg%. That is horrible. I think Humphries can get around 7 or 8 million a year. He is more than the MLE for sure, but how much more is a question.
588 Marc Gasol C 29 7'1'' 274 B+ C D+ B- B- C
The wonders of playing on a shitty team. Gasol is starting and as a result is averaging 16 ppg, 9 rpg, and 1.6 bpg. Solid stats but the ratings don’t really match. Gasol is not going to get as much as he made this year. I think his value is around the mle, maybe a little more. I don’t think he is going to put up the same numbers on a good team.
570 Joakim Noah C 29 6'11'' 241 B- C- D- A- B C
Solid. 10/9 with over 2 bpg. Noah does everything you want from a backup big. I don’t think that he is a great starter on a good team but he could be one on a bad team looking for a big. He made 10 million this year. He is probably worth around 7 million, so it isn’t far off.
493 Trey Thompkins PF 24 6'9'' 245 B+ C C- B+ B+ C
Trey has turned into a very solid big man. B+’s across the board for the big man ratings. He averages 16/10 with 2.2 bpg. His percentages are a little low but he is still a solid player. I’m not sure how much he will improve further since he didn’t do anything during TC. I think he might be a 10 million a year big, but the question will be whether or not he gets the max. I don’t think he is worth it but someone might be desperate.
647 Tracy McGrady SF 34 6'8'' 230 B- A- C B+ C F
I know T-Mac is having an off year (or years), but it is hard to deny what his ratings are. 11 ppg isn’t great at all for a starter, but just two years ago he was a 20 ppg scorer. I think there is a chance he could be a decent 5th starter, he can play defense and score if needed. MLE would be solid for him due to his decline in production but he could also be a large expiring.
527 Perry Jones SF 23 6'11'' 230 A- A- C A B B
Perry is the cream of the crop of his free agent class. He is a 28 ppg scorer who also pulls down 8 rpg. He still has room to improve. There is no doubt that he is a stud. He has the size to play the 4 or 5 or the talent to play the 3 or 2. He is going to get max, just where. He is a bit greedy so he could opt for the Knicks’ large max or go to a winner who can pay him the max. It should be interesting.
288 Travis Leslie SF 24 6'4'' 202 B+ B- C A- B- C
Leslie has had the luxury of playing beside Wade for the past several years. Leslie is a very solid SF. He can score inside, rebound, and play defense. His downside is his lack of an outside game, but that is easily resolved on an inside offense. He could be a max player since many teams want that stud wing. I’m not sure if he is quite worth it for not having an outside game. I think some team will want him for his 22 ppg and will pay it to him. Some reports are that he would like to team up with former Georgia teammate Trey Thompkins, a fellow free agent.
460 Jeffery Taylor SF 25 6'7'' 200 C+ B C A- C+ C
Usually Taylor won’t be on a list of the top free agents. He just really isn’t that good of a scorer. I mean 11 ppg for a starter. The reason he is on here is due to his defense. Taylor is a very good stealer. 2.2 spg makes him one of the bets small forward stealers in the league. How much is someone willing to play for steals?
284 Alec Burks SG 23 6'6'' 195 B- A- C- A- D+ C
Burks has developed into a nice shooting guard, however he does play below his ratings. His 17 ppg isn’t great, but with ratings like this you might expect him to be a sure fire 20 ppg player. I don’t think that with his production that he is a max player. However someone will see his ratings and his age and offer it to him. Maybe on the right team he could be a stud, but I don’t see that happening right now.
568 Larry Hughes SG 35 6'5'' 187 B- B+ B- B D+ C
Hughes is old now. I remember when he was a stud player, now he is a complimentary player. I think that Hughes can be a solid 6th man backing up the point and the 2-guard position. He is still a 16 ppg, 6 apg, 3 topg type of player. I don’t think he is worth 10 million like he is being paid this year. I can see Hughes being a mle type player or a large expiring. Then again he could always retire.
231 Terrico White SG 24 6'5'' 211 B B C- C C C
White is a pure scorer. 19 ppg on solid percentages makes him a decent player. However he can’t play defense to save his life. He reminds me a lot of Vince Carter in that he is a very good scorer but can’t play defense at all. I do think that, along with his lack of being a top scorer (B B is solid but A- A- would make him a sure fire maxer) will keep him from being a max player. 7 million or so likely what he will get.
381 Josh Howard SG 34 6'6'' 211 B- A- C A- C D
Josh Howard bolted this past offseason and has continued to show that he can be a main option. Howard can score (18 ppg) and defend (2 spg). He is efficient as well, making him even more valuable. Howard bolted for 10 million, and while giving a 35 year old another 10 million dollar contract might seem risky, I don’t think it is a crazy idea. He has shown he can produce in many different settings, so he is worth that much.
606 Kobe Bryant SG 35 6'6'' 195 B A- C+ A- C- D
Poor Kobe. He never quite developed into the stud everyone thought he was going to be. Kobe has seen his scoring diminish over the years (16 ppg this year on .435 fg% and .381 3-point%). He has continued to suck and should continue. He will be over payed because of his name recognition. I think that at this stage of his career Kobe is at best a 5th starter or even a bench guy. It is sad but he just doesn’t perform to his ratings.
437 Josh Selby SG 22 6'2'' 180 A- B- C B+ C- A
Selby reminds me a lot of Travis Leslie. They both are good inside scorer who can defend and can’t hit the long ball. Selby is a bit of a turnover problem so that hurts his value somewhat. I think what is going to carry Selby to a max is his age (22) and his scouted potential (A). He is a 20 ppg scorer already; just think he continues to improve based on his scouted. Max it is, are the Warriors willing to pay for it?
504 Avery Bradley SG 24 6'2'' 180 A- B- C B+ D+ B
Bradley joins his fellow Warrior teammate in this free agency preview. Bradley is very similar to Selby with the exception of being a very good stealer. He is a 25 ppg on solid percentages. Two maxes are hard to balance, but it looks like the Warriors will have to face it this year.
147 Gilbert Arenas PG 32 6'3'' 201 B- A A+ A C- D
Even at 32 Gil is still rolling. He is a solid scorer, can rebound the ball, and can play the point. A outside, A+ handles, and A defense is very good. Usually he would be a max player with that type of skillset, but not at his age. He could always get a max deal for less years, but I’m not sure. I do think he is a great asset to any team.
563 Mike Miller PG 34 6'8'' 218 C+ A B+ C- C C
Mike Miller has jumped around from team to team. He has been a MLE player who is either a starter or 6th man. He can play 3 positions and does very well at all of them. The main concern with Miller is his lack of defense, but you can live with him due to his scoring, handles, and passing. I would predict he will get the MLE unless a team sees his talent and is willing to offer him more.
499 Jameer Nelson PG 32 6'0'' 196 B A- C+ C+ D+ D
Nelson has always been a very interesting player. He isn’t a great passer and handler, and he isn’t a defender. That being said, Nelson is still a good scorer. He is scoring 17 ppg this season and has had 9 straight seasons of 20 ppg before this season. He got paid a little over 10 million this year. The question then is how much will he make next season. 10 million could be a possibility since he is a good player and would also be trade bait. 7 or so could be a possibility since he is still a solid offensive weapon.
6 Ricky Rubio PG 24 6'4'' 190 B- B A+ A- D- B
Rubio was well worth the wait. He has developed into a very good point guard, one who can score, dish, and play defense. There is no doubt he is a max player. He is a stud point guard and every team wants one. That is a problem for the Kings. The Kings are close to the HC. If they bring Rubio back for the max, they will be forced to trade one of their much larger contracts. They tried unsuccessfully to trade Dajuan Wagner earlier, and if they want to keep Rubio they might have to sell him at a lower price than they first wanted. Either way, someone has to go.
