People should be responsible for the contracts they give out, no point for this rule.

regulating stupidity is dumb. That's the gm's fault.

I had Kelenna during his prime years and it never broke the bank for my team. Short max contracts work.

regulating stupidity is dumb. That's the gm's fault. Yet this is exactly what the NBA's looming lockout is all about. Regulating stupidity.

actually the NBA wants to make it so the salary cap is smaller and hard. giving out huge contracts, overpaying, isn't always a matter of stupidity, sometimes you just have no choice. not everyone is Isiah thomas.
the problem is when teams are overpaying for guys where the demand isn't even there.

teams offer these huge deals knowing they are too much. I would rather 7 year max Wall than lose him. not to mention the approaching CY forces a lot of teams hands. the attitude that I would rather overpay and at least get something, rather than underpay and get nothing, isn't something you can make a rule on. This kind of underlies my point. Having a player you don't want to lose him to some "idiot" offering a max. So it forces your hand to max. We could have a max just lowering the percentage of the cap the VET max is. Is it regulating stupidity? Yes a bit but its good for more reasons than one. BIG PICTURE 1. Without these lofty deals we'll see increased trade activity 2. Less teams flirting with the hard cap

Personally, I like that teams are always flirting with the hard cap, it means they have to always be retooling rather than sitting on their team.

meh, the soft cap is low. If people still want to throw out huge contracts to avoid losing someone, that's on them.

just resign and flip them. it's not hard, as long as you know the demand is there.

yea, that's what a smart gm would do. Trade them before their contract makes them a '-'.

it's all on the gm's, no reason to make a rule. If the player gets a max he most likely deserves it otherwise oh well you lose out and that guy has to deal with his shitty deal.
